Ontario Equestrian donated $30,700 to support research on equine digestive health. The funds were not a result of a targeted fundraising effort, but from a $1.50 savings per member from not printing Ontario Equestrian membership cards.
Begun in 2017, the two-year total for the initiative was $59,300. Ontario Equestrian members voted on what research they wanted to support, choosing the research at Ontario Veterinary College as their top choice. Once it is determined what is “normal” microbiota in the equine gut, research will continue on to how to restore it to health when it is damaged.
Microbiota in the equine gut impact everything from metabolism, nutrition and more. Researchers are working on creating a simulated equine gut to understand what a healthy equine biome looks like; other scientists are studying fecal samples from healthy horses to determine if equine microbiota are affected by diets and seasonal changes.
