Opening Wager, a retired Ohio-bred stakes winner, is yet another Thoroughbred who has not only transitioned to a successful second career but has become an integral part of the South Florida racing community as Gulfstream Park outrider Hayley Hoffman's pony.

The 15-year-old son of Maximum Wager, who ran 32 times, was adopted by Hoffman five years ago.

“He needed me and I needed him,” Hoffman said. “He taught me patience, and a lot of love goes a long way.”

Opening Wager is just one of several retired Thoroughbreds who will be celebrated Saturday during Gulfstream's celebration of Thoroughbred aftercare and Florida Thoroughbred Retirement and Adoptive Care (TRAC). The day kicks off with Breakfast at Gulfstream at 8 a.m. and a visit from Skip Away (G3), Fred Hooper (G3) and Monmouth Cup (G2) winner Valid and jockey Nik Juarez. The day will also include Dachshund races beginning at 11 a.m. and an on-line auction featuring signed art by Michael Brennan. There will also be a Florida TRAC booth where those donating will receive a free t-shirt and magnet.
