This weekend's graded stakes action is highlighted by the Grade 1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita Park, featuring the return to the track of Stellar Wind, who twice defeated the race's namesake in her 2016 season. The G1 Shoemaker Mile, on turf, also features on the Saturday card in Southern California, and the G2 Penn Mile highlights a good card at Penn National.
In the Shoemaker Mile, a field of seven is expected to start in the one-mile turf contest at Santa Anita. Frontrunning Ontario-bred Heart to Heart is the slight morning line favorite, but he will face a strong challenge from both Bal a Bali and What a View, the latter of which is entering the race off a short rest between starts. Bolo and Farhaan also both pose a legitimate threat to the favorite.
The Beholder features Stellar Wind, Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Finest City, and Vale Dori, winner of her last six races in a row. No other competitors will line up in the gate to face these three top contestants, to be ridden by Victor Espinoza, Mike Smith and Rafael Bejarano, respectively.
Big Score is the morning-line choice in a field of 10 for the $500,000 Penn Mile, contested over a mile on the turf. Also in the field are Frostmourne and Bronson, as well as a triple entry for Three Diamonds Farm. Also on the Penn Mile card is the $200,000 Mountainview, featuring Page McKenney and Madefromlucky, as well as the $200,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup, featuring Richard's Boy.
