A pair of Grade 1 races top the action this holiday weekend at Santa Anita Park, with a pair of top-level favorites to lead the charge on an exciting card.
Perennial fan-favorite Lady Eli is the 4-5 morning line choice in Saturday's G1 Gamely Stakes, making the second start of 5-year-old season on the west coast for trainer Chad Brown. The three-time Grade 1 winner will face a small field of four others in the nine-furlong turf contest, led by Avenge on the rail for trainer Richard Mandella. Irad Ortiz will ship in to ride Lady Eli.
In the G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita, eight are scheduled to leave the starting gate in the 1 1/4-mile dirt challenge. Midnight Storm, a Grade 1 winner on the lawn, will be searching for his first top score on the dirt, and is the morning-line choice at 5-2 for Phil D'Amato. Other challengers posing a threat to the son of Pioneerof the Nile include the Bob Baffert-trained pair of American Freedom and Cupid and the John Sadler pair of Accelerate and Hard Aces.
