A strong three-day lineup awaits horse racing enthusiasts this holiday weekend, culminating with Labor Day on Monday and a pair of Grade 1 stakes for 2-year-olds, potentially candidates for next year's Kentucky Derby trail.
Kicking off the action on Saturday are a pair of Grade 1 races at Saratoga, the Spinaway for juvenile fillies, a “Win and You're In” for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, and the Woodward for older route horses. The Spinaway features American Pharoah's half-sister Chasing Yesterday in a field of 12, while the Woodward is a bit more wide-open, with Gunnevera favored at 4-1 on the morning line.
Saturday at Del Mar, the G1 Debutante offers a smaller field of five with three very strong candidates in Brill, Mother Mother and Bellafina.
Also on Saturday, Kentucky Downs' premier grass meet kicks off just north of Nashville. With large fields and competitive racing, the card should offer significant wagering opportunities.
On Sunday, a pair of Grade 2 races are on the card at Saratoga and Del Mar in the Prioress and Del Mar Derby, but the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs could offer a big price with a wide-open field. Lone Sailor is the favorite on the morning line in the Super Derby, but High North, Lionite and Autumn Warrior all rate a shot in the $300,000 contest.
Monday's holiday cards offer major preps for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, with Roadster topping the G1 Del Mar Futurity and the G1 Hopeful is topped by Todd Pletcher trainee Sombeyay.
At Parx on Monday, the G3 Turf Monster Stakes features Imprimis over five furlongs on the turf, but relative longshot Bucchero is always dangerous to hit the board.
