A trio of Grade 1 races top the racing action in North America this weekend, headed by Saturday's Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct. The well-traveled Mendelssohn, most recently fifth in the Breeders' Cup Classic, is back in action to try the cut-back in distance. He faces a field of seven others, led by the lightly-raced but rapidly-improving Todd Pletcher trainee Copper Town.
Also on Saturday's card is Derby prep race the Remsen, drawing a field of seven juveniles for the nine-furlong contest. The morning-line favorite is Maximus Mischief, a two-time winner at Parx Racing.
Over at Del Mar, Saturday's card features a competitive 14-horse contest in the G1 Hollywood Derby. Locally-based River Boyne is the 5-2 morning-line choice, but trainer Chad Brown has sent over a talented pair in Raging Bull and Instilled Regard for the nine-furlong turf test, a rare Grade 1 on the turf restricted to 3-year-olds.
Sunday's Del Mar Matriarch features 14 fillies and mares over a mile on the turf, led by claimer-turned-Grade-1-winner Vasilika on her eight-race win streak. Brown also has a three-strong contingent for this turf contest, topped by 4-year-old Uni who is undefeated in three starts this year.
