The lone graded stakes race on the docket this weekend is the G3 Cardinal Handicap on Saturday at Churchill Downs. With a scheduled post time of 5:24 p.m. Eastern, the Cardinal is a nine furlong turf contest for fillies and mares age three and up.
Ignacio Correas' trainee Dona Bruja is the 8-5 morning line choice in the field of 12. In her four North American starts, the mare has won two Grade 3 races, placed second in the G1 Arlington Matron, and ran fourth in the G1 First Lady at Keeneland. The consistent Argentine-bred daughter of Storm Embrujado (Bernstein) will face a challenge from the Ian Wilkes-trained Linda, who has also been super-consistent without winning a race in 2017. Brendan Walsh trainee Beauly will also be looking for her first graded stakes victory in the Cardinal.
