With 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby on offer, Saturday's Sham Stakes drew a field of seven newly-turned 3-year-old colts trying to take their first step toward the roses. Trainer Bob Baffert will send out a pair in the Santa Anita feature, including the highly-touted Coliseum who is the even-money favorite on the morning line.
Baffert will also send out the favorite Mother Mother in the G2 Santa Ynez on Sunday at Santa Anita, making her first 3-year-old start in the hopes of working toward the Kentucky Oaks.
Also on Saturday is the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park. While it does not offer official points toward the Derby, it is often the first step for Florida-based sophomores looking to step in that direction. This year's edition features Grade 1-placed Code of Honor for trainer Shug McGaughey and several talented Florida-breds making the switch to open company.
