What better time than the day after Thanksgiving to have a healthy serving of humble pie?
Some of you may remember back in early August I threw down the gauntlet and challenged anyone and everyone to take me on in a handicapping challenge, specifically for year two of FantasyCapping.com, the Breeders' Cup fantasy league.
I should have been flagged 15 yards for taunting my opponents.
“You don't have a chance because you're playing against me,” I bragged in the arrogant invitation to join the Play Against Ray FantasyCapping private league.
Well, 198 of you took up the challenge and 143 of you did better than I did in making theoretical bets on a series of 14 races, beginning with the Whitney at Saratoga and culminating with the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.
I laid a big, fat goose-egg, selecting exactly zero winners during league play. So did 56 others, so at least I wasn't alone!
I'm ready for that pie now after a Thanksgiving feast yesterday.
The winner of our league was Joe Pettit, under the stable name of Kentucky Stud. Joe ran away from the competition, building a bankroll of 1,245 points from $280 in theoretical wagers. Each point is equal to the payoff from the weekly $20 win, place, show or exacta box bet, so Joe more than quadrupled his point total.
The winner of the Play Again Ray FantasyCapping league is awarded a $200 donation toward the charity of his or her choice, and Joe asked that we send his winning donation to Old Friends of Georgetown, Ky.
In second place was the Superterrific Stable of Dana Byerly, co-founder of the Hello Race Fans! website (@HelloRaceFans and @superterrific on Twitter) who checked in with 939 points. Dana has asked that her $100 donation go to Our Mims Retirement Haven in Paris, Ky.
Tied for third was GrandpaDeee (Dwyane Hall) and Pony Up (who we have not been able to identify yet), each with 730 points. $50 has been earmarked for third place, and Dwyane has asked for his share to go to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Congratulations to the winners and thank you all very much for joining the Play Against Ray Breeders' Cup FantasyCapping league.
We hope to do this again in 2014, but this time I really mean it when I say you don't have a chance to beat me!
