Win Willy

Racing fans love a local favorite – a horse that endures over time at the same track, stays sound, and always shows up to compete. At Oaklawn Park these days, the “People's Horse” has to be Win Willy. The winner of the 2009 Rebel Stakes (at 56-1) and 2011 Oaklawn Handicap is still going strong at age 7.

Since the Paulick Report's Ray Paulick and Scott Jagow are sharing their Oaklawn Diaries from Hot Springs, Ark. on Rebel Stakes weekend, they just had to stop by the barn and meet this tough competitor (29-10-5-5 lifetime). In this special edition Three Chimneys presents Good News Friday, learn more about the People's Horse and his stablemate, Stormy Holiday, who will try to pull a Win Willy-style upset in this year's Rebel.

I remember well that Rebel Stakes, I was an Old Fashioned fan a year after Eight Belles and Silver City went to the front, Old Fashioned went by him and then here comes Win Willy. Old Fashioned’s career ended the next race at the Arkansas Derby, Silver City hung around a while longer, but Win Willy – for having the persistence the sport needs is still there!!

The year Win Willy started racing, my precious dog Willy died. I remember thinking…well, here’s another Willy I can love to pieces. And I have…

I do love these stories. Go Willy !
Reminds me of Catlaunch with well over 90 starts and racing in Ohio at 11 yrs of age. He was a winner too…over one million the hard way. These horses are so good for racing.
