The Derby 20 Presented By Adequan: Making Sense Of Major Preps

by | 04.08.2019 | 2:12pm
Tacitus wins the 2019 Wood Memorial

The weekend's blockbuster graded stakes action and trio of Triple Crown prep races have begun to clear up a muddy picture of the Kentucky Derby, with favorites winning two races and Baffert trainees topping the Santa Anita Derby.

I loved Tacitus' run in the Wood, as well as Roadster's at Santa Anita. These two join my top three candidates this week, while Game Winner drops down to fifth after another close defeat. That's not to say Game Winner won't be a major threat on the first Saturday in May because Baffert certainly knows his way around the Churchill oval, but it will take a price of 6-1 or better for me to wager on him in the Kentucky Derby.

I'm not sure what to think of Vekoma just yet because the Keeneland surface has been so speed-favoring for the first few days of the meet. That said, Win Win Win was one of the few horses to make up ground all weekend and he should appreciate another furlong.

Also this week, a Japanese-bred colt accepted an invitation to run in the Derby. Master Fencer ran second in his last prep and will be the first horse from Japan to run since Lani in 2016.

A few horses have enough points to join the main Derby field but did not make my Top 20: Gray Magician (second in the UAE Derby) and Bodexpress (second in the Florida Derby). Additionally, there are several talented horses left out of the top 20 in points at this juncture, including Bourbon War and Anothertwistafate, but there is still a chance that defections could help those horses make the field.

Here are the current point standings: Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard.
