While the Road to the delayed Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5 will take a detour to New York for the Belmont Stakes on June 20, a newly anointed official Derby points race, the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes, is featured on Saturday's card from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
The top four finishers in the Matt Winn receive 50-20-10-5 qualifying points for the Derby.
In this latest edition of the Triple Crown News Minute Presented by Kentucky Equine Research, Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick is joined by news editor Chelsea Hackbarth to review a field of a dozen 3-year-olds topped by Maxfield, the only graded stakes winner in the lineup.
A son of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, Maxfield will be making his first start since winning the G1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland last Oct. 5. He was among the favorites for the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile but was withdrawn and underwent surgery for an ankle chip.
Up-and-comer Pneumatic from Steve Asmussen's barn, front-running Ny Traffic and stretch runner Major Fed may pose the stiffest challenges to Maxfield in the 1 1/16-mile race on the main track. Maxfield carries 123 pounds, with all others under 118 pounds.
