Each week we update the standings for American Graded Stakes winners by a variety of categories, including breeder, owner, trainer, jockey, sale company, consignor, and sire.
In the latter category–led by Dynaformer with seven individual AGS winners, followed by Malibu Moon and City Zip with six apiece and then Medaglia d'Oro and Unbridled's Song, with five each—I decided to drill down another level this week and look at the sire of sires of AGS winners.
Of the 143 stallions that have sired at least one AGS winner, 13 were sired by Storm Cat, a son of the Northern Dancer Storm Bird who is also the sire of one AGS winner this year, the 4-year-old Courageous Cat. So Storm Cat and his sons account for 10% of the sires of American Graded Stakes winners this year.
That list of sons of Storm Cat with at least one AGS winner this year is: Bernstein, Cat Dreams, City Place, Freud, Giant's Causeway (sire of First Samurai, sire of one AGS winner), Hold That Tiger, Moguk, Sea of Secrets, Stormy Atlantic, Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart, sire of three AGS winners), Tribal Rule, and Yankee Gentleman.
Second on the list is the late Raise a Native stallion Mr. Prospector, with 10 sires of 2010 American Graded Stakes winners. His sons with 2010 AGS success are: Act of Duty, Aldebaran, Cape Canaveral, Chester House, E Dubai, Gulch, Jade Hunter, Not for Love, Seeking the Gold (sire of Petionville, sire of one AGS winner), and Smart Strike.
A.P. Indy, a son of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, has seven sons represented by 2010 AGS winners, and Seattle Slew himself has sired four sires of 2010 AGS winners, including A.P. Indy. A.P. Indy's sons with 2010 AGS winners are: Congrats, Full Mandate, Indy King, Jump Start, Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, and Pulpit (sire of Essence of Dubai and Tapit, sire of two 2010 AGS winners each). Seattle Slew's sons are the aforementioned A.P. Indy, Chief Seattle, General Meeting, and Slew City Slew.
Along with Seattle Slew, there are five sires with four sons that have sired 2010 AGS winners: Deputy Minister (by Vice Regent), Gone West (Mr. Prospector), Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer), Seattle Slew (Bold Reasoning), and Unbridled (Fappiano).
Of the eight sire of sires listed, three trace through their male line to Northern Dancer (Deputy Minister, Sadler's Wells, Storm Cat), three to Raise a Native (Gone West, Mr. Prospector, Unbridled), and two to Nasrullah through Bold Ruler (A.P. Indy and Seattle Slew).
