Select Sales Agency Presents American Graded Stakes Standings: Not All Are Lonely At The Top After Breeders’ Cup

The Breeders' Cup weekend has a way of swinging the American Graded Stakes Standings in one of two directions: It either throws the rankings into chaos after the right connections get hot over a pair of graded stakes-filled cards, or it confirms the leaders that were in place when the weekend began.

With the 2019 renewal of the Breeders' Cup in the books, it appears the answer is the latter. No divisional leaders were toppled by the world-class card, and many of those on the mountaintop have a more comfortable cushion over their contemporaries than they did a month ago.

However, there were a few categories that became more heated after the Breeders' Cup races were tallied. The yearlong struggle between Stonestreet Farm and Calumet Farm for the leading breeder spot by graded stakes winners is once again at a stalemate, with each posting seven winners of nine graded stakes races in 2019.

Stonestreet Farm made up ground on Calumet in the “breeder” column by winning the Grade 3 Sycamore Stakes at Keeneland, then taking the Grade 2 Chilukki Stakes at Churchill Downs with Sally's Curlin.

The race for leading jockey also became much tighter after the Breeders' Cup. Javier Castellano still sits atop the division with 34 wins, but Irad Ortiz Jr. pulled within one win of the leader.

Castellano added two wins at the Breeders' Cup aboard British Idiom in the Juvenile Fillies and Belvoir Bay in the Turf Sprint. Ortiz picked up four wins at the event, taking the Classic on Vino Rosso, the Turf aboard Bricks and Mortar, the Dirt Mile aboard Spun to Run, and the Juvenile Turf Sprint on Four Wheel Drive.

Leading trainer Chad Brown continued to add to his insurmountable advantage in his division in the Breeders' Cup, saddling Turf winner Bricks and Mortar, Mile winner Uni, and Juvenile Turf winner Structor.
