The 2018 racing calendar featured a run of dominant individual performances in graded stakes races, but several of the industry's core positions saw tight finishes in compiled graded wins as the year came to a close, especially in the bloodstock realm.

The races for top consignor and breeder by number of graded winners in 2018 each came down to a one-win margin, while two horses split the sire title.

The Lane's End operation finished the year with a pair of top placings to its credit. Lane's End led all consignors by both wins and winners, with 21 horses notching 31 graded scores. Three horses who contributed heavily to those totals were Eclipse Award finalists Game Winner, City of Light, and McKinzie.

Taylor Made Sales Agency finished second by graded wins and winners, with 20 graduates racking up 27 victories. Graduates who earned Eclipse nominations included Catholic Boy, Rushing Fall, and Bellafina.

Both consignments can lay claim to Improbable, a finalist for champion 2-year-old male and winner of the G1 Los Alamitos Futurity. The City Zip colt was consigned as a weanling by Lane's End at the 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, where Taylor Made Sales Agency picked him up, as agent, for $110,000. Taylor Made then consigned him at the following year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where he sold to Maverick Racing and China Horse Club for $200,000.

Lane's End also staked a firm claim to the top of the sire list, with two of its roster members tying for the most winners on the year. Quality Road and Candy Ride each finished with 10 graded stakes winners, with Quality Road edging out his contemporary for most graded wins by a 15-14 margin.

Quality Road is the sire of Eclipse finalists City of Light, Bellafina, and Abel Tasman. Candy Ride will be represented at the Eclipse Awards by finalists Game Winner and Gun Runner.

Behind the Lane's End duo was a quartet of sires with eight graded winners in 2018: English Channel, Uncle Mo, Curlin, and Into Mischief.

Stonestreet Farm finished the year as the top breeder by graded winners, with eight horses winning nine races. That edged out WinStar Farm, which finished the year with seven graded winners.

The Stonestreet banner was carried most successfully by Good Magic, who took the G1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and the G2 Blue Grass Stakes. The operation of Barbara Banke was also represented by G1 winners Restless Rider and Complexity.

The race for most graded wins by a single horse in 2018 was a dead heat between Horse of the Year finalists Accelerate and Monomoy Girl, each taking home six. Midnight Bisou finished one behind the leaders with five, and the six-horse logjam with four graded wins included Triple Crown winner Justify.

The human side of the on-track leaders was not quite as competitive at the top. Chad Brown reigned over the trainer division, winning 46 graded stakes with 28 different horses. Todd Pletcher was closest by winners with 16, while Bob Baffert was second by wins at 27.

The Ortiz brothers were well clear in the leading jockey race, with Jose Ortiz besting Irad Ortiz Jr. by a 35-30 margin. Flavien Prat finished third with 26 graded wins.
