Midnight Bisou wins the Beldame

It's getting to the point of the year when the serious Horse of the Year contenders start staking their claims in earnest, and top filly Midnight Bisou has done nothing to knock her case so far.

The 4-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute is an impressive seven-for-seven in graded stakes competition this year through the end of September, putting her on top of the American Graded Stakes Standings' equine division, ahead of turf stars Bricks and Mortar and Vasilika with five each.

Midnight Bisou most recently kicked free in the Grade 2 Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park on Sept. 28 to keep her unbeaten record in 2019 intact. She'll head into the Breeders' Cup as one of its most imposing figures, with a resume that also features wins in the G1 Apple Blossom Handicap, Ogden Phipps Stakes, and Personal Ensign Stakes, the G2 Azeri Stakes, and the G3 Houston Ladies Classic Stakes and Molly Pitcher Stakes. She is owned by Bloom Racing Stable, Madaket Stables, and Allen Racing.

Midnight Bisou has been a serious mover and shaker on the American Graded Stakes standings beyond her own rankings. She has moved the needle for Woodford Thoroughbreds as both a breeder and consignor, and she helped propel Steve Asmussen to second place in the trainer standings by graded stakes winners behind Chad Brown. In the race for top jockey, she has given Mike Smith six of his 14 graded stakes wins this year, placing him seventh, and John Velazquez has won once aboard her this year, putting him in third with 23 wins.

The leading sire race is deadlocked through the end of September, with Hill 'n' Dale Farms' Curlin and Gainesway's Tapit tied at nine individual graded winners and 12 total wins each.

With more and more graded stakes races for 2-year-olds coming and going on the calendar, three stallions who made noise through the end of September were WinStar Farm's Constitution, Liam's Map of Lane's End, and Palace Malice of Three Chimneys

Constitution had two graded stakes winners at the close of September, with Amalfi Sunrise taking the G2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar and By Your Side winning the G3 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga.

Liam's Map became the first freshman sire with a Grade 1 win when Basin took the G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, while Palace Malice took his place on the scoreboard with Structor, winner of the G3 Pilgrim Stakes.
