The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes rightfully dominate headlines every May, but the sons and daughters of Hill 'n' Dale Farms' Curlin put in quality work during the month, not only rocketing their sire to the top of his division in the American Graded Stakes Standings but giving him a comfortable lead.
Curlin had five new graded stakes winners in May, giving him nine total through the first five months of the year. That more than doubled the number he had at the end of April and put him three ahead of previous leader Tapit.
Three of those wins came on the same May 17 card at Pimlico Race Course, in fact coming in three of four consecutive races. First came Tenfold, who returned to the scene of his third-place finish in last year's Preakness to win the Grade 3 Pimlico Special Stakes. The G2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes immediately followed, where Point of Honor notched her first career graded stakes win. Two races later, Mylady Curlin completed the banner day with a front-running score in the G3 Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes.
Elsewhere in the country and on the calendar, Global Campaign took the G3 Peter Pan Stakes on May 11. Most recently, Vino Rosso rung up his first Grade 1 in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes on May 27.
Taylor Made Sales Agency extended its lead in the consignor standings by winners, outpacing Lane's End by a 14-10 margin. Among the new graded-winning graduates for Taylor Made was Catholic Boy, who took the G3 Dixie Stakes in his seasonal debut.
Another dominant month by Chad Brown extended his top spot in the trainer standings, with his seven new winners taking his combined total for the year to 14, nearly doubling next-closest Steve Asmussen with eight. All seven of Brown's graded wins in May came on the turf, led by Bricks and Mortar's deep-closing triumph in the G1 Turf Classic Stakes on May 4 at Churchill Downs.
The race for leading jockey continues to be tight as the year approaches its midway point, locked at the top by Javier Castellano and Irad Ortiz Jr., tied at 14 graded wins.
All three of Castellano's graded wins in May came on Preakness weekend, including Catholic Boy's Dixie, Point of Honor's Black-Eyed Susan, and a record-shattering score in the G3 Miss Preakness Stakes aboard Covfefe. On the flip side, three of Ortiz's four wins came on Kentucky Derby weekend, featuring Bricks and Mortar's Turf Classic, Beau Recall's G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes, and Digital Age's G2 American Turf Stakes. Ortiz also booted home Homerique in the G3 Beaugay Stakes at Belmont Park.
Vasilika extended her winning streak to four in the G1 Gamely Stakes on May 27 at Santa Anita. All of those wins have come this year in graded stakes competition, making her the first four-time graded winner of 2019.
