Irad Ortiz Jr. and Chad Brown

The defending Eclipse Award winners for champion trainer and jockey took big steps in defending those titles in the month of March, vaulting themselves to the top of their respective divisions by North American graded stakes wins.

Chad Brown bagged five graded wins last month to take a firm command of the trainer standings, while Irad Ortiz Jr. broke a three-way tie among the leading jockeys with five graded victories of his own. Three of those wins came in tandem, with Ortiz riding Brown trainees Bricks and Mortar in the Grade 2 Muniz Memorial Handicap, Focus Group in the G2 Pan American Stakes, and Rymska in the G3 Hillsborough Stakes.

All five of Brown's graded wins in March came on the turf, also adding the G3 Herecomesthebride Stakes with Cambier Parc and the G3 Honey Fox Stakes with Precieuse.

After starting the month with two graded stakes winners on the year, Brown finished March with six winners of seven graded stakes, giving him sole possession of the lead after three months. Mike Maker, Todd Pletcher, and Richard Baltas are each tied for third with four graded winners through the first quarter of 2019.

Ortiz entered last month tied with Javier Castellano and Flavien Prat with five wins each, and he doubled that number in March to finish with 10. In addition to the three wins with Brown, he added scores in the G2 Mac Diarmida Stakes aboard Zulu Alpha and the G3 The Very One Stakes on Holy Helena.

Castellano and Prat each added one win in March to finish with six, tied with John Velazquez for the second most graded stakes victories by a jockey on the year.

Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings moved to the top of the breeder standings, with two wins in March, giving the operation of Barbara Banke three overall on the year. Champagne Anyone prevailed in the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks, while Gladiator King won the G3 Hutcheson Stakes.

In the consignor standings, Taylor Made Sales Agency maintained its lead at the end of March, with seven winners of eight graded races, adding a win by graduate Cutting Humor in the G3 Sunland Park Derby. However, Lane's End closed the deficit behind Taylor Made from three winners to one, with winning graduates including Focus Group in the Pan American, A Thread of Blue in the G3 Palm Beach Stakes, and Concrete Rose in the G3 Florida Oaks.

The biggest mover in the stallion ranks last month was Candy Ride, who jumped into a three-way tie for second by graded winners, with three on the year. He picked up two of those in March when Chocolate Kisses won the G3 Honeybee Stakes and Do Share took the G3 Tom Fool Handicap. Gainesway resident Tapit remains the division's leader, with five graded winners.
