Over the past couple of weeks, we've taken a look at the leaders of different divisions of the American Graded Stakes Standings of 2014. This week, the focus is on broodmare sires.
The stallions that ranked among the top five broodmare sires of AGS winners are familiar names, although a few may come as a surprise. As he did last year, the venerable A.P. Indy topped the list with 15 graded stakes winners. Of those, four won Grade 1 races – Artemis Agrotera, Crown Queen, Imagining, and Moreno.
The late Storm Cat finished second on the list, with his daughters producing 12 graded stakes winners. Two of those – Close Hatches and Shared Belief – not only won three G1 races each, but both are Eclipse Award winners. Shared Belief was 2-year-old champion in 2013 and Close Hatches was honored as Older Female champion in 2014.
Unbridled's Song entered the top five for the first time in 2014, coming in at third. Daughters of the gray stallion produced eight graded stakes winners, with Carpe Diem (Breeders' Futurity) becoming a Grade 1 winner.
Dixieland Band returned to the AGS list, coming in at number four. Daughters of the former Lane's End stallion produced seven graded stakes winners last year.
Four stallions finished tied for fifth on the AGS list – Distorted Humor, French Deputy, Grand Slam, and Tale of the Cat. Daughters of French Deputy and Tale of the Cat each produced two G1 winners.
