Keeneland Presents American Graded Stakes Standings: Kentucky Derby Day’s Riding Star

by | 05.11.2018 | 12:38pm
Jose Ortiz was all smiles after guiding Kaleem Shah's homebred American Gal, trained by Simon Callaghan, to a Derby day victory in the G1 Distaff.

He didn't win the big one, finishing second to Justify while aboard champion Good Magic in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, but Jose Ortiz was the riding star of the day last Saturday at Churchill Downs. He took the other two G1 races on the afternoon, winning the Distaff aboard American Gal and the Turf Classic on Yoshida. The 24-year-old native of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, added a third American Graded Stakes victory aboard Limousine Liberal in the G2 Churchill Downs Stakes.

The three wins extended the lead by Ortiz among jockeys in 2018 American Graded Stakes standings. He now has 13 AGS wins on the year, five more than his brother Irad, Javier Castellano, Derby-winning rider Mike Smith and John Velazquez.

His 13 AGS wins have come for nine different trainers, but none from AGS co-leader Todd Pletcher and just two from co-leader Chad Brown. Combined, Pletcher and Brown have 25 AGS wins thus far in 2018.

Ortiz's star has clearly been rising. In 2017, he won his first Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey in North America, ending the four-year run by Javier Castellano. His $27,318,875 in mount earnings led all North American jockeys. In AGS wins, however, Ortiz ranked third in 2017.

Can he maintain the lead while based in New York, where Pletcher and Brown figure to dominate throughout the year? Only time will tell.
