Keeneland Presents American Graded Stakes Standings: Ghostzapper’s Versatility

by | 05.18.2018 | 2:33pm
Ghostzapper's daughter Holy Helena and Manny Franco hold off Lottie and Santa Monica in the Sheepshead Bay

May 5 was a monumental day for the Adena Springs stallion Ghostzapper, the 2004 Horse of the Year by Awesome Again. Both Ghostzapper and Awesome Again were bred and raced by Frank Stronach, owner of the Paris, Ky., farm where they both stand.

Ghostzapper's daughter Stage Magic produced G1 Kentucky Derby winner Justify (by Scat Daddy), and he is also the broodmare sire of G1 Distaff winner American Gal on the Derby undercard at Churchill Downs. The daughter of Concord Point is out of the graded stakes placed American Story.

Ghostzapper is the only broodmare sire to have three individual AGS winners thus far in 2018, with G3 winner Cosmic Burst joining Justify and American Gal.

But wait, there's more.

Ghostzapper was also the sire of two AGS winners on Derby day, when Proctor's Ledge won the G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill Downs and Holy Helena won the G2 Sheepshead Bay on turf at Belmont Park. Earlier this year, Ghostzapper's son Runaway Ghost won the G3 Sunland Derby at Sunland Park.

Like Ghostzapper, a G1 winner at distances ranging from 6 ½ furlongs to a mile and a quarter, his offspring and those of his daughters have both speed and stamina. American Gal's victory was at seven furlongs, while Justify won at the classic American distance of a mile and a quarter. Holy Helena, who beat colts going 1 ¼ miles on synthetic surface to win the 2017 Queen's Plate in Canada, won the Sheepshead Bay over 11 furlongs.
