Young: Creator, Suddenbreakingnews Possible To Upset Exaggerator

Private clocker Gary Young likes favored Exaggerator in Saturday's Belmont Stakes, but if someone upsets the Santa Anita Derby and Preakness winner in the final leg of the Triple Crown at a mile and a half, he says it likely would be Suddenbreakingnews or Creator.

“Does Exaggerator run OK in the mud and does he get the pace scenarios, yeah. Do I think he's the best horse, yeah,” Young said. “But based on when I was timing horses for the Kentucky Derby, if you ask me for two horses to beat him, it would be Suddenbreakingnews and Creator.

“Suddenbreakingnews is built and strides like a mile and a half horse, although it's a matter of record that deep closers don't necessarily fare too well in the Belmont.

“Although there weren't that many horses with serious trouble in the Derby this year, the one that had the most was Creator. He had a ton of trouble when there was the one chain reaction between the 2 ½ and the quarter pole.

“If I had to pick the winner I'd pick Exaggerator, but from a value standpoint, Creator and Suddenbreakingnews are the other two horses I'd mention.”

I agree with one of your 3.
3 contenders I like are Exaggerator, Brody’s Cause and Cherry Wine.
    Exaggerator:
In his last 4 Gr1 stake races he has performed head and shoulders above any of the
horses he is up against in the Belmont. He has displayed a consistently hard
determined drive and hasn’t shown any sign of backing off. Exaggerator has won
at 4 different tracks and had a sharp 5 fur workout June 7th at
Belmont. I don’t expect he will run any differently in the Belmont Stakes.

    Brody’s Cause:
I’m disregarding Brody’s Cause run in the Ky Derby. In the video replay Brody’s Cause
broke well from post #19 but there was a ton of speed inside of him including
the likes of Danzing Candy amongst others. He was too far to the outside and
couldn’t cross over with the speed holding him out there. Instead Saez had to
take him back and it was game over. I think coming off the far turn at the head
of the stretch he will be in a better position to make a run to the finish.

    Cherry Wine:
I like the way Cherry Wine is trending upwards
in his last 2 starts he is carrying his assigned weight well, running farther and
giving better performances against better horses. He had a sharp workout at
Belmont June 7th breezing 5 fur in 1:00 4/5ths so I think that is an
indicator he likes the track. I think he will be up a little closer around the far
turn and he has a good turn of foot to the finish.

There are all kinds of different possible scenarios in this year’s Belmont.

      You should have mentioned Creater.

  • Tinky

C’mon, Gary, can’t you supply the PR with a better photo than that? Sub-contracting a precocious two-year-old kid with a cell phone would be an upgrade.

    Creater wins by a nose.

    Good pick in Creator Gary.
Well timed ride by Ortiz Jr.
    Asmussen prepared Creator perfectly.
Winstar management decision to run Gettysburg was a very good move.
    Congratulations,
