Before watching his colt work four furlongs in 45.97 seconds, trainer Dale Romans said he has the horse to beat in the Belmont Stakes, reports the Washington Post. Romans said after the workout that it reminded him of Dullahan’s work prior to the Blue Grass, a race he won easily on April 14.

“When he works like that, he runs big,” Romans said. “He looked like he was galloping, and then we got back to the barn he recovered quickly. He wasn’t blowing. I think he’s ready.”

In response to Dale Romans’ confidence he has the horse to beat in Dullahan, I’ll Have Another’s trainer Doug O’Neill said: “I respect (Dale) a ton, so if he says that, it’s scary. As confident as he is in his horse, I’m equally confident in my horse. I think we’re in really good shape.”

Romans may be right.  Dullahan didn’t look like he was going that fast, as he covers a lot of ground with his massive stride.  Reminds me a bit of Point Given, with deceivingly fast workouts.  Both big horses.

The cat is out of the bag now. Dullahan will beat IHA under wraps.
Castellano will catch Mario sleeping at the top of the stretch and blow by him.
Mario has been “trained” to wait and sit (especially now at Bel) and it will be too late to catch Dullahan.
Also, just look at IHA PP’s, the 2 times he got beat was when a horse pulled up OUTSIDE of him. In his 4 wins, no one ever came within 2 lengths on the outside.

HELLO ,reality check he just worked in 45, he will be in front !!! they will have no control over that after working in 45  speed drilled into him FRESH HORSE and works a half to run a mile n a half  duh….he will be gunning early bet on that

  • Helloskinny

I think Dullahan worked too fast and left his race on the training track.

IHA is the horse to beat.  That is the plain and simple fact.

I’m sure people said the same thing about Sword Dancer, Arts and Letters and Conquistador Cielo when they beat older horses in the Metropolitan Mile six or seven days before they won Belmont. The first two had both already run second in the KY Derby and Preakness. Maybe horses weren’t such wimps back then when racing was still considered a sport, not an “industry”.

Nobody’s gonna accuse Dale of NOT training his horses! They are usually tough when there’s big money on the table!

Although I want a Triple Crown and want I’ll Have Another to win in the worse way, I say if not IHA then I’m going with my boy, Union Rags. Having said that, Dullahan is due a big one and this is one dangerous dude. It would not be too big a surprise if he takes the Belmont. He most certainly has the chops to win it.

  • Skip Ean

IMHO, Dullahan is the only horse that can beat IHA in the Belmont.  He can do the distance and mud doesn’t bother him.  And the weather in the NY Metro area has been soggy for more than a week now…

I’m sure Mr. Romans knows what he’s doing but breezing 45 and 4 before going a mile and a half…not sure about that one….guess we know who’s going for the lead.
