Triple Crown hopeful I’ll Have Another put in a fourth solid gallop over Belmont Park’s main track Monday morning as Team O’Neill began planning some extracurricular activities during the lead up to the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes on June 9.

As I’ll Have Another is scheduled to do each day before the 1 ½-mile “Test of the Champion,” the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner went to the track shortly after the renovation break, jogged a half-mile and galloped a mile.

“If any of you guys got a chance to see him, I think he’s maintained his energy level and his stride, and he looks fantastic,” said trainer Doug O’Neill at his daily press briefing. “Today the track was, according to the crew, at its deepest and most tiring, so it was good to get him over that, and he recovered very quickly and drank a very little bit of water. So he’s fit, and we have to stay lucky and stay injury-free and we’ll be in great shape.”

O’Neill, who said he was hoping to attend a taping of “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in Manhattan, revealed that he, jockey Mario Gutierrez, and owner J. Paul Reddam, had been invited by Jessica Steinbrenner to throw out the first pitch when the New York Mets play the New York Yankees on the eve of the June 9 Belmont Stakes.

“If all goes well they asked us the day before the Belmont to have Mario, Paul and I, to symbolize the Triple Crown, to have all three of us throw it out,” he said. “What a huge honor it is. That should be a blast.”

Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Dullahan arrived at Belmont Park at approximately 6:30 Monday morning to finish preparations for his attempt to spoil I’ll Have Another’s Triple Crown bid in the June 9 Belmont Stakes.

“He’ll jog in the morning, gallop a few days, and breeze on Saturday,” said trainer Dale Romans of the Donegal Racing color-bearer. “He came out of the Derby in great shape. He’s happy, fresh, [and the race] didn’t seem to knock him out any. He has the extra time between races, and he’s doing great.”

Romans will remain in New York through the Belmont Stakes, the trainer said. Later today, Romans will saddle 2011 Preakness winner Shackleford in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, which also attracted To Honor and Serve, Caleb’s Posse, Saginaw, Caixa Eletronica, and Jackson Bend.

How fitting that the sport of baseball – whose numerous players have been caught cheating after taking steroids injections – will honor the connections whose trainer will suspended for 45 days on or about July 1st, 2012.

  • Tinky

I wonder if the Yankees will allow Reddam to wear a Breath Right strip?

  • Brody Howe

Why can’t any of you see the positive in anything? Mistakes have been made by everyone, including YOU throughout your lives. The connections of I’ll Have Another will be the first ones to admit that they haven’t been perfect, but they realize that and have dealt with what they’ve been given to the best of anyone’s abilities. They have all improved as people and horsemen and are TRULY trying to help out this sport in every way possible, especially now since they have been put on the stage to do so. At the same time, it is tough when negative, non-optimistic people like yourselves continue to just bring out negative after negative. No matter what you believe, there is no doubting that O’Neill and his team are trying to promote this “Sport of Kings” in the best was possible. So whether you like O’Neill or not, why can’t you all do the same and help bring this great American sport back to where it belongs? Put your opinions aside, and put these horses and this sport we all love first on your priorities, because when that happens, there is no telling what kind of impact a triple crown would be. Do what’s best for horse racing and make it look like the wonderful breathtaking sport it is now that it is on the biggest stage it could possible reach!

  • Tinky

    “…negative, non-optimistic people…”

That is a frequently made mistake. Most of us who are very critical of people and aspects of the current American racing industry ARE optimists – I certainly am. But it would be absurd for me pretend that things are rosy, or to put “positive” spin on things are decidedly negative.

Even if IHA were trained by Mother Theresa and were to win the Triple Crown, it wouldn’t have a major impact on the health of the sport. The industry is riddled with deep, structural problems that no amount of marketing will be able to hide.

  • stillriledup

Actually, the connections of IHA are NOT the ‘first ones’ to admit they havent been perfect. The trainers brother said they had to google ‘milkshake’. To me, that’s them NOT “admitting” they did anything wrong.

When did the connections actually admit they cheated and apologized? Did i miss it?

Don’t think so!  That would be a positive advertisement!!

    Tinky —

    Not true!! Racing is fine,
except for those who do not understand, for lack of experience, as
most here, and you, of course!!

  • Big Red

After Mario finishes his riding lesson from Jerry Bailey at BEL, I hear J. Paul has hired Tom Seaver to come back and teach the buys how to throw a baseball.
The Three Stooges live on !!!!

  • Frank L.

    Big Red —
You seem to know a lot about being a STOOGE!!  Your experience shows through on this subject, although NOT with respect to horse racing per se!!

  • Myphilly1

No you are incorrect about Tom Seaver coming back to teach them to throw. It will be Roger Clemens who comes back to teach them even more than they’ve already learned from him.

  • Big Red

Frank, get over yourself. I’m sure their will be a support group for you to join to help you stop drinking the O’Neill cool-aid.
And yes, I LOVE the 3 Stooges !

“what’s best for horseracing”is to rid the industry of drug promoters and users, particularly those who’ve had multiple infractions in multiple (say 14) states.  the “kind of impact a triple crown would be” if o’neill wins is a tainted one that supports and condones cheating “on the biggest stage it could possibly reach”.  the r. dutrows and d. o’neills in the industry need to be shown the door out, and THAT is “what’s best for horse racing”, period.

  • Frank L.

    Big Red —

I can understand you liking the 3
stooges, BUT, stop trying to “act” like them!!

  • Frank L.

It would only be tainted to someone who thought they knew more than they actually did!  The “real’ fans will embrace IHA and O’Neil if they can pull it off.  Stick it to ‘em DOUG!!!

  • Don Reed

The Yankees themselves have been wearing them ever since A-Rod joined the club.
