A loose horse nearly collided with I’ll Have Another during training hours at Belmont Park on Thursday, reports the Daily Racing Form. The loose horse, a 3-year-old maiden filly named Isleta, barely avoided I’ll Have Another as she galloped along the outside rail. I’ll Have Another was unscathed and able to complete his regular training for the day.

The incident led trainer Doug O’Neill to request Belmont officials set aside time for Belmont Stakes contenders to train.

Officials at the NYSRWB could not be reached for comment as they were in the middle of their Peppermints – performance enhancing or just tasty? conference.

I remember when Smarty Jones came back to Philly Park after the Derby after the break to reharrow the track he ( Smarty) was the only horse aloud on the track.

Ooooo, not good.  Gotta be as careful as possible.  Scheduled “alone time” on the track would be advisable, if permitted.  Prayers for safety for all…

I hope everyone is OK. But when I read the headline, my heart stopped as we all know these horse collisions are often deadly.  I remember reading that Rachel Alexander was brought to the track way before dawn so she would be out with a few horses or none at all. I pray for the safety of all our equine athletes and their jockeys.

No joke, even when riders/jockeys are in the saddle/sulky, if the horses collide, there’s hell to pay.  Years ago, two harness horses on the track at the Meadowlands, training early in the day, inexplicably zeroed in on each other and literally, a two-heads-first collision resulted.  Neither survived.

Any chance we can run the fantastic full-page photo of the back page of the NY Daily News (Friday June 1st, 2012), showing the drama?

The News has been almost permanently hibernating for decades now, but this once, they woke up & remembered what such powerful photography can do to tell the story & get their readers’ attention, lightning fast.
