Kent Desormeaux is an alcoholic. He has fought the battle long and hard, and although he is a brilliant rider, his personal struggle has cost him much throughout the years.

In the past few weeks, it has cost him even more-a ride on Tiger Walk in the Preakness Stakes and any chance of riding Dullahan in the Belmont Stakes. He had been the regular rider of the Dale Romans-trained colt, who he rode to victory in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and to a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.

“You can tell when he’s not acting right — he doesn’t ride right,” Romans said. “But when the good Kent shows up, he’s the best rider in the country, and one of the best of all time. That’s what the shame of it is.”

I have known and written about Kent’s ups and downs for many years.  I’ve also lost two children to drugs and alcohol, so I can relate to the problem.  Nobody really cares about all that but your immediate family and friends.  My son passed on last September, so having written about illegal drugs and meds for a long time, I’ve developed the usual anger toward abusers.  That’s the reason I have absolutely disdain for Pat Valenzuela who has broken every rule in the book and never respected the game.  Alcohol and drug abuse is everywhere you look.  Hopefully Kent wants to fix his problem.  If he’s really interested in doing that then he’s got a chance, but if it’s just for show?  As many of you know I have spent a great deal of my years as a turf writer on the subject of designer drugs and cheaters.  I’m putting the finishing touches on a book about horse racing in the 70s and some views on why the wonderful sport has gone in the wrong direction.  Let’s hope Kent finds his way because the P Val way is disgusting and has not been fair to the other riders in the room who have lived and worked by the rules.  Yes, I’ve been oine of the most outspoken people when it has come to P Val, but his disrespect for the game and others is something that should not have allowed him so many chances.

I’m sorry for your losses Warren.  Addiction is a hard thing to understand.  These people aren’t being disrespectful to the game.  It’s not arrogance that keeps them using drugs and alcohol.  The pain it causes their families goes way beyond being unfair to fellow riders.  If anything their desire to ride gives them something to focus on in their fight to get sober

So very sorry for your loss.  My heart goes out to you and believe me we do care.  Lets hope Kent can overcome his problems but it will take great strength of character for him to do so.   Good luck with your book.

I agree, and good to see everyone supporting him. Public figures are often scrutinized far too harshly for suffering the same problems as everyone else. I just hope Kent’s alright.
