The hopes of racing finally having a Triple Crown winner came to an end on Friday when it was announced that I’ll Have Another had suffered an injury and would be retired. Throughout the tough Triple Crown campaign, trainer Doug O’Neill has been in the spotlight…not just for being Derby & Preakness winner I’ll Have Another’s conditioner, but for his somewhat checkered history.

Andrew Beyer writes in his latest column that while the spotlight is often harsh, O’Neill has handled himself admirably, and has always put his colt’s welfare first.

Admirably is a related to the word “Admire”. I think most of would admire him more if he stopped running horses with banned substances in their systems.

Whether or not he knowingly placed the performance enhancers in those horses, the bottom line still remains that as far as the bettors are concerned, they could care less. A TC02 horse is a TC02 horse regardless of HOW the stuff got in the system and the TC02 affects the performance of horse races that we’re  expecting to be clean. I can’t get my money back if a ‘souped up’ horse beats me, so i’d just rather have all the horses running clean than having to hear a trainer saying “oops” after the fact.

Hopefully after Doug returns from his suspension that’s starting soon, we won’t have to hear his name ever again linked to this type of stuff.

Staying clean is more ‘admirable’ than anything i could think of at the moment, hopefully Doug spends his suspension figuring out a way to make sure his horses don’t ‘accidentally’ test positive for anything in the future.
