A crowd of 85,811 wagered $13,777,920 on Belmont Stakes Day races today, the second largest Belmont Stakes Day on-track handle ever, trailing only the $14,461,402 wagered in 2004 when Birdstone broke the Triple Crown bid of Smarty Jones.

The on-track handle was also the third largest ever at Belmont Park, behind only the $14,742,521 wagered on Breeders’ Cup Day 2005 and the 2004 Belmont Stakes Day handle.  It easily eclipsed the previous non-Triple Crown Day record of $10,581,093 set in 2001 by 30.2 percent and was up 36.4 percent over $10,098,573 in 2011.

The attendance of 85,811, the sixth largest ever at Belmont Park, smashed the previous non-Triple Crown Day record of 73,857 set in 2001 by 16.2 percent and was up 53.8 percent from 55,779 on Belmont Stakes Day last year.

All-sources handle, which includes all wagering on NYRA Belmont Stakes Day races nationwide, was $96,485,985, the third highest ever for Belmont Stakes Day.  It broke the previous non-Triple Crown Day record of $89,705,885 set in 2009 by 7.6 percent and was up 18.8 percent over last year’s total of $81,245,326.

$1,191,088 of the on-track handle was wagered by patrons at the Aqueduct Racetrack simulcast facility, up 66.9 percent from $713,732 in 2011.

Today’s record Belmont Stakes Day All-Graded-Stakes Pick 4 pool of $2,856,185 was up 21.4 percent from last year’s record-breaking Late Pick 4 pool of $2,352,456.

The Pick 6 pool was $1,682,176, a 12.5 percent decrease over last year’s record-breaking Belmont Stakes Day Pick 6 pool of $1,921,917, which included a carryover of $144,003.

Betting interests for the 13-race Belmont Stakes Day card totaled 126, compared to 125 for 13 races in 2011.

“What a great day of racing with five tremendous graded stakes, including the ultimate test of the champion,” said Ellen McClain, President and COO of The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA).  “Congratulations to Phyllis Wyeth, Michael Matz, and John Velasquez on a thrilling victory by Union Rags.”

“This has been another outstanding day of thoroughbred racing for New York and NYRA thanks all of the connections who raced at Belmont today and our countless fans who visited Belmont Park and watched coverage on NBC and at simulcast facilities across the country.”

It’s amazing what  good horses, some advertising and a fair amount of media coverage can do.  It’s sad to see an ad in the major NY papers several times per week for the casino (which only barely mentions the casino is at Aqueduct) but almost never an ad for a non-major day of racing.

The marketing at NYRA and most other tracks is pathetic.  And with all the slot money floating around in NY and elsewhere, there is really no excuse for it.

And speaking of marketing the sport:

This coming Saturday (June 16) has two MAJOR Saturday night programs at Churchill and Colonial Downs that along with some help from Hollywood Park and Charles Town (which I believe has a big race of its own for three year olds that night) and even Mohawk Raceway in Canada (which has four major Harness races for three year olds headlined by the North American Cup, arguably the second most important event in Harness Racing for three year old pacers that night) could have been put together into a made-for-TV, three-hour prime time extravaganza on NBC that could have been a perfect launch to the second half of the racing year and road to the Breeders’ Cup except for one small problem:  It’s the same weekend as the US Open Golf Championships.

What Churchill and Colonial need to look at for 2013 is to move the Foster and Colonial Turf Cup in each case back by one week so they are NOT on the same week as the US Open while Charles Town could do the same with the Red Legend Stakes (which I believe is a $400,000 race for three year olds) and Hollywood Park could make adjustments to their stakes schedule (including moving the Charles Whittingham back by two weeks and moving up the Triple Bend and American Oaks) to create what likely would be a 10-race, made-for-TV racecard that could air on NBC from 8:00-11:00 PM ET that would be on a night (in 2013 on June 22)  when television ratings are down the drain anyway and NBC would likely welcome having an event that could actually bring in people that otherwise not be watching NBC or any other network that night.  This is the same road that helped make poker as popular as it is today (going into time slots no one else wants) and one tracks need to be flexible about if this sport is going to expand in popularity beyond the Triple Crown events.

Ron…You have too many ideas that could work.  Horse Racing doesn’t like people like you.  They prefer the slow and painful death.

All well  and good, but you would think that they would have fountian drinks available. I can not believe on thier biggest and hottest day. Every soda fountain was broken so people were forced to buy more expensive beer. Sounds kind of fishy not unlike how they pulled “I’ll have another”, 12 hours before the race and then dragged him out with all his legs super taped up. The whole day was strange and I have been going for 35 years,

do you think it could have anthing to do with the stupid new law on sodas in n.ythat had something to do with it

Come on, if you spent $700 per ticket/seat (as the
people behind me did) were you not going to go anyway? and bet?? Also they
expected the handle would be up because people would buy $2 win ‘souvenir’
tickets on I’ll Have .. however that is probably the only ‘bet’ many
fans would have made. With the horse out people were apt to bet more since it
opened up the race and not betting against him.

Still. Was a great race. No complaints here about the quality of the card. Just don’t fluff up the numbers as if it wer a resurgence of horse racing. Hope they took care of the IHA connections. Enter, no scratch until friday etc. Half of the crowd didn’t even kno the triple crown was not being contested until after arrival and a few cocktails. Beautiful
