Per yesterday’s announcement from The New York State Racing and Wagering Board, The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced that Barn 2 at Belmont Park will serve as the secured Belmont Stakes Barn. The barn, which will have a designated press area, will be ready for Belmont Stakes contenders to move into starting on Tuesday, June 5.

Additionally, NYRA has announced that it has designated a specific time each day available for Belmont Stakes contenders to train. Starting Friday, June 1, the only horses that will be allowed to train over the Belmont Park main track from 8:30 – 8:45 a.m. (right after the harrowing maintenance break) are Belmont Stakes contenders. Please note that this does not mean that Belmont Stakes contenders are required to train during this timeframe, only that this timeframe will be reserved for only Belmont Stakes contenders to train.

the Belmont Horses should have been able to move in shortly after the Preakness…NYRA could have had all this in place a hell of a lot sooner…this FREAK is going to win in spite of all this last second BS!!!…

  • Figless

Yeah NYRA should have anticipated these new rules and had everything in place ten days before the NYSRWB even created them! Gotta love it.

In fact how in the world did NYRA allow a good horse like Alpha to get sick this week thereby effecting the race quality?? They should have had isolation barns prepared for every horse and assured that each potential starter have the track and back strecth completely to itself for training each morning. The NY AG is launching an investigation into this as I type.

  • Lory

fig you are being silly -isolation barn no way -back strech to themselves-wow real silly – they i think overreacted by special training break but that is a good idea.

  • Figless

Was an apparently poor attempt at sarcasm, sorry

It concerns me, somewhat, Fig, that Lory thought you were being serious.

Just want to point out that the isolation barn was the reason Zenyatta was never brought to Belmont Park out of concern for the welfare of the horse. She was definitely a creature of habit and I believe they did not think she could handle it mentally & still race at her ability. Dale Romans just commented in an article on the BloodHorse that these regs are definitely not for the benefit of the horse and that horses are not cars that can just be parked in a garage and then race. He did not think it would affect Dullahan but I think that is not true of all horses.

  • Tinky

Ridiculous. First, the detention barn at Belmont was a race-day affair when Zenyatta was in training. In this case, the horses will have several days to settle in. Did she have a problem training and racing out of a different stall at Churchill? She arrived on Tuesday prior to the BC. Please.

Any horse that is unable to handle living out of the same stall for five days leading up to a race doesn’t deserve to win a big race.
