Rontos Racing Stable Corporation's Wildcat Lily battled down the stretch to win the $100,000 Grade III Azalea Stakes in the Summit of Speed at Calder Casino & Race Course on Saturday.
“I was not surprised,” said winning trainer Manny Azpurua. “She is a very fine filly. She is easy to train.”
The 3-year-old chased the pace then rallied to challenge Dreaming of Susie at the top of the stretch. After a back-and-forth battle, Wildcat Lily edged ahead at the eighth pole and held on for the win.
“The trainer told me to put her 1, 2, 3; she felt good,” said winning jockey Jose Alvarez. “It looked like (she was going to) stop the last sixteenth, but she never stopped; she ran good.”
“She ran good, but not as good as I had hoped,” said Azpurua when asked what his plans are next for Wildcat Lily. “I have to wait and see (where she will run next). We have to take our time.”
Wildcat Lily returned $10.20, $4.60, and $2.80 for the win. Dreaming of Susie paid $4.00 and $3.40 for second, and Speedinthruthecity paid $2.40 to show.
Completing the order of finish was By Golly Molly, Street Girl, Twice Told Tale, Bama Rose, and Guadalupe High.
