Silentio, coming off a solid third-place finish to reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the Breeders' Cup Mile, scored his first victory of 2013 after winning the photo finish in a head-bob with Summer Front in Friday's Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park. Winning Prize finished a close third after setting the pace. Time for the 1 1/16 miles on firm turf was 1:40.66.
Owned and bred by Wertheimer and Frere, Silentio is trained by Gary Mandella and was ridden to victory by Rafael Bejarano. He was the 3-2 favorite.
Silentio was wide around the first turn after breaking from the six post in the field of seven older horses, but secured a good position going into the last turn as Winning Prize set fractions of :23.15, :46.74, and 1:10.22 for the first six furlongs. He split horses at the top of the stretch and took aim on the front runner, who went the opening mile in 1:34.52, but Summer Front was rallying strongly to his outside. The two horses hit the wire together, with Silentio getting the narrow decision over Summer Front, who shipped to California from New York for Waterford Stable and trainer Christophe Clement.
A 4-year-old by the Sunday SIlence stallion Silent Name (who stands at Adena Spring Canada), Silentio was produced from the A. P. Indy mare Listen A. P. The win was his first since taking the G2 Sir Beaufort at Santa Anita last December and fourth overall from 10 starts.
