Sky Lantern proved much the best Friday in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Royal Ascot.
Under jockey Richard Hughes, the gray Irish-bred came from last in the field of 17 to win by a widening three lengths over longshot Kenhope and morning line favorite Just the Judge. The final time for the mile over a good/firm turf was 1:39.84.
Sky Lantern and Just the Judge last met May 5 in the G1 Qipco One Thousand Guineas at Newmarket, where Sky Lantern prevailed by half a length. Just the Judge came back three weeks later to win the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh, while Sky Lantern was making her first start since the May 5 race.
Sky Lantern, who finished 8th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita last November, has now won five of nine starts, including three Group 1's. The daughter of Red Clubs out of the Shareef Dancer mare, Shawanni, is trained by Richard Hannon.
