Kizuna claimed his first Grade 1 victory when he won the 80th running of the Japanese Derby on Sunday, but the race was even more notable for his jockey. Rider Yutaka Take was aboard the 19-10 favorite for a record fifth win in the 1 ½-mile turf contest. Take was also in the saddle for Kizuna's sire Deep Impact's 2005 win in the race.
Kizuna previously won a Grade 3 in March before heading to the Grade 2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai by a length and a half in his most recent start. The son of Deep Impact and Storm Cat mare Catequil brought trainer Shozo Sasaki his first Japanese Derby.
Kizuna is owned by Shinji Maeda and was bred in Japan by North Hills Co Ltd.
