Revolutionary (Withers), Flashback (Robert B. Lewis) and Falling Sky (Sam F. Davis) were victorious Saturday and each collected 10 points to debut on the leaderboard.

A reminder: non-restricted stakes earnings is the tiebreaker to determine rankings, and only Triple Crown nominated horses (released Saturday afternoon) are listed on the official leaderboard.

Only two “Kentucky Derby Prep Season” races with a 10-4-2-1 point distribution are left: the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate on Saturday, Feb. 16 and the Southwest at Oaklawn Park on Monday, Feb. 18 (Presidents’ Day). No races are scheduled next weekend.

The two-leg “Kentucky Derby Championship Series” begins Saturday, Feb. 25 with the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream and Risen Star at Fair Grounds. Points to the Top 4 finishers will increase to 50 for first, 20 for second, 10 for third and 5 for fourth.

Of course, a horse with the racing record of Mine That Bird would be off the list and ineligible.  The establishment has exacted revenge on geldings that cannot be syndicated for huge bucks.  Still,  there should still be some correlation between the current point system and the previous graded stakes earnings system.  And the new system gives heavier weight to horses peaking in form as they near the brought by Yum brands Derby rather than last year’s wonders.  I am sure some math wonks will compare the new system with the old system to see which horses benefited or lost out.

The real debate though might  be whether the Derby should be limited to 14 to reduce some of the clutter and bad racing luck.  If a horse ever wins the Triple Crown again, with the huge Derby fields and the much larger foal crops of today compared to 40 and 50 years ago, that horse will be a horse for the ages, even if he or she goes winless thereafter.

There is no “might be” the real debate about limiting the derby field.  It will be 20 as long as they can fill the stalls

I do not doubt you mr. guest  and let us hope five horses never go down at once while the nation is watching.  At least back in the day those 20 horse cavalry charges in The Futurity were on a long straight track with no turns.

Has the new system served the interests of anyone other than CDI?  The chance of seeing a filly run has went from ‘rare’ to ‘extremely rare’. And many trainers already have declared that they will only run one more prep race. So….other than punishing the Illinois Derby and making the Breeders Cup Juvenile irrelevant…along with making the UAE Derby as important as the Blue Grass Stakes and Santa Anita Derby…what was accomplished?

Well, don’t forget that euro turf race that counts as much as the BC Juvenile…you know, that world famous whatchacallit race…the only turf race that counts!

so why did the churchill downs club come up with the new idea of a points system ?    did they realize that 2 year old stakes races are not important for the kentucky derby in the lasix era ?    did they not want a rabbit like trinniberg (b.c. sprint champ, eclipse award winner) to push a star like bodemeister into a 45.20 half for an endurance race ?    did they want to avoid a tragedy with eight belles by making fillies get experience against the boys ?   didnt winning colors win the santa anita derby, before she won the kentucky derby ?  or did they want to eliminate the illinois derby for no good reason at all ?
