From Stonestreet Stables Press Release/Caroline Shaw Public Relations

LEXINGTON, KY (May 6, 2009) – Stonestreet Stables, majority owner of two-time Horse of the Year, Curlin—and Harold T. McCormick of Birmingham, Alabama together with Dolphus Morrison and Mike Lauffer of L and M Partners, LLC announced today the purchase of Rachel Alexandra, the three-year-old filly who is undefeated in 2009 and the winner of last Friday’s Kentucky Oaks by over 20 lengths.  As agreed to by both parties, terms of the deal were kept confidential.

“Rachel Alexandra is one of the best horses in racing today,” said Jess Jackson of Stonestreet Stable. “She is fast, strong and durable—the traits we should all be breeding into all future generations of race horses.   Her beauty and athleticism will thrill thousands of fans. ”

“We are delighted to sell Rachel Alexandra to Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables. Its reputation for integrity, putting the best interest of the horses above all else, and just doing things right will ensure this incredible thoroughbreds’ future and the industry at large. We are equally please she will retire after her racing career to Stonestreet Stables,” said Dolphus Morrison of L and M Partners, LLC.

In addition to the Kentucky Oaks win, Rachel Alexandra’s major victories include the Golden Rod Stakes (2008), Martha Washington Stakes (2009), Fair Grounds Oaks (2009), and Fantasy Stakes (2009). Foaled in 2006, Rachel Alexandra was out of Lotta Kim, a daughter of Claiborne Farm’s multiple stakes winner, Roar. Rachel Alexandra was sired by Medaglia d’Oro, a multiple Grade I winner who retired with career earnings in excess of $5.7 million.

Jackson indicated that when Rachel Alexandra’s racing career concludes, he will breed her to Curlin, whose speed, strength and durability are the key qualities in his  “New Horse.”

The resilient Curlin, winner of 11 of 16 races in two consecutive campaigns—including the 2008 Dubai World Cup, the 2007 Preakness, and the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic—is known as an “iron horse” for never missing a race or a workout and retiring in perfect form and health. Rachel Alexandra has many of these same traits.

“We are tremendously excited by the prospect of one day seeing the offspring of Curlin and Rachel Alexandra,” said Jackson. “But for now, the story of this filly is still being written. My four daughters and granddaughter will be delighted this super filly will race in our colors.”

If Mr. Jackson switches trainers or the jock, I will be furious.

  • MED

    Laurie, I totally agree.

  • bugweed

Just say no to drugs, Steve.

  • Joe

I hope that RA stays with Hal Higgins. Helen Pitts deserved to keep Curlin.

  • http://www.superfectablog.com Superfecta

Ditto what Joe said – and here’s hoping Jess follows fan sentiment on this one.

  • Charlie

Ready to rumble? Here comes the big filly. Look out Boys- Here she comes!!!!

  • wesly

    Let G Rarick train her!

  • Glimmerglass

A shame that the whine baron has managed to get his hooks into her. The way its being spun you’d think she was a street urchin with just a glimmer of promise and only now will her full potental be realised.

I think skipping the Preakness and Belmont was/is a fine strategy. Hal has done her right to date with the training and see her go to Steve A. immediately is a shame.

  • Barbara

The thought that she is leaving Wiggins and going to Assmussen is absolutely disgusting. Curlin was a maiden winner when he was sold to be pointed to Derby preps and moved to Assmussen. This is a made horse and the reward is for the nicest guy in racing to lose her??

Jess Jackson didn’t even say he would leave Borel on her when he was interviewed by phone this evening on TVG. Just made it clear he was calling the shots now. He did not sound like he was anxious to run her against colts either but yeah, right.

Most of all, he wanted us to all know that she will be bred to Curlin. And I am betting that is next year.

  • JR

A shame she will go to that suing owner and his trainer. I hope she runs drug free. Just goes to show you these people can’t breed their own but have the money to buy the winners. The shine somewhat came off this beautiful story.

  • Molly Montag

I also am wondering if Wiggins will get to keep her. Sure hope so.

And I can only hope that Jackson shows the same restraint that the filly’s former owners did, which I’m thinking he probably will based on they way he campaigned Curlin.

I’m just glad IEAH didn’t buy her.

  • ktq

How utterly disappointing. The thought that the trainer and jock will most likely lose what they have accomplished with this talented filly is sad in itself. But the thought she is going to that trainer makes it all the more disgusting. I am so fed up with this sport. I strongly, strongly advocate that no horse trained or owned by someone with a drug record be allowed to received Eclipse Awards until their record is clean. Until we start hitting owners with some sacrifices and penalties, this sport will never change. A week off at the trainers chosing only to have them call in their instructions? Give me a break. Uggggh, this news ruined my day.

  • john tyler

I guess nobody thought of speed, stregnth, and durability in a race horse till Jess Jackson came around.

  • wesly

You guys are being rough on Ray’s main man!

  • Barbara

What is the deal with Asmussen. Why exactly is he so tight with Jackson. Or rather, Jackson’s advisors.

This story is completely tarnished now.

Karma is going to catch up with this crew.

  • Point Given

Am I the only person happy with the changing of ownership? Jackson will likely race her in the Preakness and/or Belmont and most likely giver her a 4-year old campaign as well. I don’t think racing fans could see her in better hands than Jackson. Hope he gives her to Baffert though…

  • Tiznowbaby

If Jackson removes her from Wiggins’ care, then that is all kinds of wrong. Please, Mr. Jackson, do the right thing and leave her with her trainer and her jockey. Furthermore, would you let him call the shots?

  • yessirgeneralsir

She is standing in Curlin’s stall as we speak I bet.

  • http://gallopfrance.com G. Rarick

Sorry, Wesly, but I can’t take her – we just missed the Arc entry by a day.

  • wesly

    Damn!

  • Arkle

    Puff goes the fairytale.

At the end of the day we are in a business and obviously L@M Stables made a business decision. Whether Hal Wiggins was supportive of the decision we may never know. Maybe he got a cut or maybe he got broadsided by his longtime owner.

Either way this is why people have a tough time sticking with the sport. Horse huggers maybe…. but the truth is we need horse huggers just as much as hard nosed businessmen

  • Erin

I think this is great. Her old owner probably got quite a windfall AND really got to enjoy this filly for a time. I loved the way Jackson campaigned Curlin – conservative enough but not afraid of challenging him and showing his talent.

Are people forgetting that Jackson is the only owner in recent times to actually consider public opinion in making decisions with Curlin? He owns the horse…he had no need to do that other than respect and appreciation for the sport and its fans. This man has stood for reform for in the way of transparency in sales, drug free racing, uniform rules, and he emphasizes durability and longevity in his breeding program. Really, wtf is everyone’s problem??

And yes, so excited she will now get a shot against the boys.

I do hope he keeps Borel and Higgins.

  • Loma Linda

LOL @ them challenging Curlin. They sent the horse to Dubai to get appearance fees and to beat up on inferior competition. They abandoned the Arc charade after running second in his first start on turf! Lets also be clear about another thing, Ole Jess wasnt being “sporty” keeping Curlin racing as a 4yo, they couldn’t retire him at 3 because of the ownership scandal.

Curlin deflated like a balloon after they stop juicing him. Luckily the handicap division was a wasteland last year.

If Jess removes Wiggins for the doper Asmussen, who has over 20 cases pinned to him, it will be a sad day for the sport.

What glory can be had buying a filly like this. Does he think anyone is going to salute him for it? There is something to be said about prospecting yearlings and helping identify talent you wish to own/train. Buying a filly that wins the Oaks by 20 is not a stroke of genius its a stroke of greed and ego. He’s no hero for campaigning this filly at this point.

  • Glimmerglass

So can one assume that the lawsuit between Jerry Brown @ Thoro-Graph and Michael Lauffer had to be settled before this deal took place?

That suit contended Lauffer bought half of her from Dolphus Morrison based upon the analysis and advice of Brown.

    http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2009/April/28/Consultant-files-suit-over-Rachel-Alexandra-deal.aspx

For the record IEAH did look at buying a part of her about the same time Lauffer did. They passed on the deal based upon the vetting results with a small ankle chip – since fixed.

  • LCM

WHAT A F$*%*^ DISGRACE….HOPE SHE NEVER WINS ANOTHER RACE.. REAL NICE….LIKE ASMUSSEN CAN DO A BETTER JOB THAN WIGGINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHAT A JOKE THIS BUSINESS IS…UHH I MEAN “SPORT”….JUST SICKENING…..

I’M SO SORRY FOR HAL WIGGINS AND EVERYONE IN HIS BARN, I CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE HOW DEVESTATED THEY ARE…….

  • Tiznowbaby

Erin, you ask wtf is everyone’s problem. My problem is that a really nice guy, who’s done nothing wrong, just got a terrific, once-in-a-lifetime filly moved from his barn for absolutely no reason.
Can Jess Jackson, as the owner, do what he wants? Of course. But, that doesn’t make it right.
Rachel was doing fabulous with Hal Wiggins. Why did she have to be moved?
Jess Jackson touts integrity. I think the right thing to do in this situation was leave her with the trainer whose obviously done a terrific job of developing her.
    I really dislike this move.

  • Noelle

Agree with Erin. Why so much bitterness toward Jess Jackson? A lot of it sounds like sour grapes.

To those who claim he raced Curlin as a 4 year old because of the Midnight Cry situation – that situation is ongoing and Curlin is now retired. To those who disparage Curlin because he wasn’t undefeated – many great horses have lost races. On the dirt, Curlin was fabulous.

I believe Jackson kept Curlin racing because he was having the time of his life campaigning a great horse. What’s so awful about that? Maybe he’ll be able to interest a wider audience in Rachel Alexandra than just the racing crowd. He certainly tried to do that with Curlin.

Asmussen’s record ought to make him ineligible to train RA. Jackson has been a strong vocal advocate for reform – for hay, oats and water. He should put his money where his mouth is. The Wiggins-Borel team works for the filly – why mess with perfection?

I hope Jackson doesn’t run her against the boys. She reminds me of Ruffian.

  • Erin

First, no announcement has been made by Jackson about the trainer so let’s not put the cart before the horse. However, it’s really likely she will go to Asmussen, and no, it’s not what I would have wanted. But she’s not. my. filly…

“Can Jess Jackson, as the owner, do what he wants? Of course. But, that doesn’t make it right.”

Why is it “not right” that someone pays 50% of $3-4 million for a racehorse and then wants to make his own choice (oh the audacity!) about who trains and rides her? I think that right comes with a horse’s price tag. Rachel Alexandra is not a public commodity.

“LOL @ them challenging Curlin. They sent the horse to Dubai to get appearance fees and to beat up on inferior competition. They abandoned the Arc charade after running second in his first start on turf! Lets also be clear about another thing, Ole Jess wasnt being “sporty” keeping Curlin racing as a 4yo, they couldn’t retire him at 3 because of the ownership scandal.”

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t…so Jackson does take the challenge, and you criticize. He doesn’t take the (Arc) challenge, (and no, it’s not because they want to do what’s best for the horse) and you criticize him for that. This guy can’t win for trying.

And point me to where the courts dictated that Curlin race as a four year old because of the Midnight Cry fiasco.

  • Tiznowbaby

Erin, Rachel was moved to Asmussen’s barn at 5:15 this morning. Wiggins has already said they miss her.
Why is it not right that he moved her? In my opinion, you don’t do that to a person. Again, I’ll say of course he can do what he wants; he paid the money to call the shots. And, again I’ll say, that does’t make it ethically correct. That’s my opinion, which is just as valid as yours.

  • Erin

    And such is horse racing.

I’ll continue to enjoy this great filly and wish her nothing but success.

In my humble opinion, there’s a lot worse things in racing to be upset about.

  • Barbara

    Erin,

Curlin raced as a 4 yr old because Jackson had not bought out Padua and the other partner he had until end of 2007. Not just because of the MC Stable (20%) issue. Curlin is a horse that would be retired by November sales to get the best mares. So they raced him. And your post about how Jackson had not announced his new trainer at 10:57 A was amusing. Jackson watched her being led out of her stall by Asmussen and Blasi just past 5A.

  • Barbara

NY Times Drape has her price as 3-4 million. If that is true, then Jackson is the best bargain hunter in the world. But it’s not true.

  • Benny the Bull

May he choke on that pisswater he calls wine…..

  • Erin

Barbara, I noted in all my posts above that it was basically a foregone conclusion that’d she’d go to Asmussen. So I guess what I said would happen happened but my personally not reading about it til a few hours later is…really…funny?

  • Barbara

I said amusing. I wouldn’t go so far as funny.

  • Glimmerglass

Drape’s low quote of $3 – $4 million is ‘most likely’ the price that each Stonestreet paid AND Harold T. McCormick too; most other published but speculative reports are pegging the value between $8 – $10 million total.

Then again Jess (via consultant Ric Waldman) tried to convince the court in Nov 2008 that Curlin was only worth $20 millon and that his bid of $4M for Midnight Cry’s 20% stake was competitive.

  • Barbara

GG – I think you are spot on – that is was what each party paid. Although they have not said what the percentage split is yet? All we can be sure of is who is the Boss;)

  • Joe

From the Oaklawn Park website, here is a quote from Hal Wiggins:

“You must be patient in training horses,” he said. “I am from the ‘old school’ of horsemanship. Even a horse with only a small ailment, you should stop on the animal immediately. Believe me,this pays off in the long run.”

I feel so sorry for Mr. Wiggins and for Rachel. It is such a big change in the middle of her racing campaign. I hope that JJ and A$$mussen were considerate enough to let her groom stay with her for at least a few weeks. I always feel sorry when thriving horses leave a great barn, but it is nothing like what poor claiming horses go through, especially the fallen graded stakes winners. They have lost any sense of belonging somewhere with somebody many barns ago.

  • Noelle

In Jackson’s defense – it takes 2 to tango. So many of you are mad at him for moving the filly to Asmussen – but the sellers must have known what would happen. So why is nobody mad at them for taking the money and running, when they must have known it would cost Wiggins the filly?

On another subject, Major League Baseball just handed Manny Ramirez of the LA Dodgers a 50 GAMES suspension. He tested positive for performance enhancing drugs – he’s OUT until July 3. MLB didn’t tell Manny, “your suspension starts the day after the season’s over”. If Thoroughbred horse racing had rational, centralized management, and treated violations with appropriate seriousness, as MLB is doing, the cheaters would soon be out of the game.

  • Barbara

Noelle, that is excellent news about Manny! Karma is a biatch – and she found his new address in La La Land. Yes, this sport and it’s “suspensions” are a complete joke.

On former owners of RA – oh yeah, they suck, too. It’s not like she wouldn’t maintain significant residual value. But on the other hand, it’s their lottery ticket to cash. And no more expenses like insurance. I have wondered if the low ball price rumor was meant to help them gyp Wiggins;) Oh, yes, I can be mean. So lets get that out of the way.

  • Eilise

This looks gimmicky on Jackson’s part. He couldn’t wait to announce he was breeding RA to Curlin. Big deal, Horse of the Year Lady’s Secret crossed with Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew produced Agnes Liner. Silverbulletday crossed with AP Indy produced Tice. And how many great racing fillies were a disappointment as broodmares. Regret, Winning Colors and Genuine Risk are just a few that come to mind.

  • D. Masters

I don’t think Jackson is a scuzz bag. However, what Wiggins did seems to be the best for RA to the point of events as of 5:15 this a.m. Sorry that Jackson felt the need (once again, somewhat like Curlin) to change the most influential people in RA’s life. As to Asmussen, well that would be another entirely different thread, don’t you think?

Never dis the horse. If you want to dis the connections, fine. But never the horse.

I think RA sold for alot more than 3-4 mil. However, unless they got some type of fertility med check…I wouldn’t start running to the bank with black type winners foaled. I’m sorry to hear they are probably going to run her in the Preakness. Seems the former connections found the perfect mix and philosophy. Just say some prayers for the horse and the staff that are saying….what happened? Money happened RA, groom and Wiggins…MONEY!

  • Molly

    Re: Noelle (post 28)

I’m hoping she doesn’t run against the boys (at least right now) for the same reason. Just didn’t want to say it.

  • Erin

Eilise, those great race mares and their produce records are exactly what I thought of when he announced his sorta hokey sounding “super horse” theory.

Tesio had a theory that these great race mares left their “nervous energy” on the track and that nervous energy was “the source for willpower and determination in superior horses.”

    http://books.google.com/books?id=3RXyUI8wpbYC&pg=PA7&lpg=PA7&dq=tesio+superior+mares&source=bl&ots=w1ZMfq9zx2&sig=Ej4iGTmOGnCxXADOc3pyylak1rg&hl=en&ei=JxwDSqr1O47SlAft9rDcBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1

Who knows, but there does seem to be something to the fact that so many great race mares don’t pass on their winning ways.

  • Erin

Interesting write up on mares “leaving it on the track,” with solid counter points in the comments.

    http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/scot/archive/2008/07/11/saving-it-vs-leaving-it-on-the-track.aspx

  • MED

I lost a lot of the good feelings I had about racing from the weekend. I’m so stunned and disappointed that lovely filly is going to a cheater like Asmussen. I hope at least Wiggins got a big payoff.

I want to cry. I want to quit. Freaking DRUGS and the people that use them.

  • LCM

You really have to question Jackson’s intelligence….what on earth does he have to gain by moving that filly to Amussen’s barn? NOTHING. Except maybe it was Wiggin’s who fought not to run her with the colts. I’m sure Asmussen says GAME ON BOYS!!! That poor filly. Once again, the welfare of the animal is the last thing on anyone’s mind…. I have to assume the owners NEED the money. This filly would’ve been almost priceless if she continued to run the way she has. Talk about short sighted.

  • Shamanka

Asmussen is over ever since racetracks tightened up their doping rules. He didn’t even get a Derby starter this year. But now Asmussen gets the glory for a horse that somebody else trained. It’s just sad.

And I’m another that doesn’t want to see Rachel in the Preakness. It just smells too much like Jackson-Asmussen are trying get their ugly mugs in front of the camera.

And I’m not dissing the horse but I don’t see her as a lock to win against Grade 1 colts by any stretch. She only dusted glorified allowance horses in the Oaks. They should put her up against a filly like Zenyatta before running her against the colts.

  • Turf Club Honey

Jess Jackson is going to change the breed with this great mating? Pleeese…That Eohippus Derby winner, Mine That Bird should show him that good horses come from everywhere. Everytime he opens his mouth I cringe.

  • Molly

    Wow.

This really bothers me, too, but some of you guys need to take a deep breath and step away from the ledge.

  • Bob Lee

I’m disappointed that RA is being moved to the Asmussen barn and that Calvin Borel will likely lose the mount. I’m even more disappointed that the new connections are talking about running her in the Preakness. That said, it’s a bit over the top to be vilifying Jess Jackson. He is not a demon but rather a filthy-rich horse owner who jumped at the opportunity to buy a world-class race horse. Nothing new in that. It’s been done thousands of times before and will be done thousands of times again. At least he’s one of the better filthy-rich horse owners who at least has some sense of trying to rebuild the sport into something sustainable again.

As for Wiggins, I give him props for how he handled RA but he was THE TRAINER not the owner. RA never was his horse and like all trainers he is employed at the discretion of the owner, whoever that may be. He was amply rewarded with his 10% of her winnings and any other fees he collected from the owners. That’s how the business works. Trainers lose horses to other trainers every day.

  • Barbara

Wow. I learn so much here. “Trainers lose horses to other trainers everyday.” Really? Guess what, Rachel is not an everyday horse. And, for fun, since it apparently happens every day, name the last KY Oaks winner to change barns.

  • Bob Lee

Well Barbara, as an example of another great filly who recently transferred owners and trainers your memory only needs to stretch as far back as Stardom Bound. And I wasn’t happy about that change either… but it’s the way of the sport whether I like it or not.

Apparently you think this is rare but it isn’t.

  • Barbara

SB was sold at auction by a guy who was dispersing all of his horses. Last time I checked she was in a stall on May 1, not in the KY Oaks field, much less a winner. So exactly how well did that barn switch go for her?

I don’t think moving horses is rare, I think moving horses as rare as Rachel from a nice guy like Wiggins who developed her and her success…to a guy with a violation record longer than my arm is not good for the horse, the fans, or the sport.

Let me be very truthful, while my main concern is for Wiggins and I do think she should have been left with him – if she was going to Baffert, Mott, Tagg, or many others, I’d have no comment.

  • Ann Banks

Egos and money fuel the horse industry. Period. People sell horses for money. I am sure Hal Wiggins has been or will be very well compensated for a job well done. Genetics 101 disputes the Curlin-Rachel Alexandra cross will produce a super horse but wouldn’t that be fun if it did? Assuredly the sale is a bitter pill for all the hands on people who have nurtured the great filly but the sale won’t stop them or any of us from cheering her down the stretch. Let’s all of us wish her good health and God’s speed in her new circumstances and on her new path.

  • Erin

If Rachel Alexandra’s former owner, Dolphus Morrison, had his druthers, her next start won’t be against the boys.

“Colts should run against colts, and fillies should run against fillies,” Morrison told The Post. “There are a couple of reasons for that. I just think the classics are realistically a showcase for our stallions, and 3-year-old fillies don’t have the internal structure and strength [to compete against males].

“I think the stress of a couple of those races leaves them vulnerable to getting ruined. There are a lot of examples. It’s just not smart.”

Everyone still unhappy this guy isn’t still racing her?

  • LCM

Think about it this way…..Could anyone imagine SECRETARIAT being taken from Lucien Lauren? What about RUFFIAN….taken from Whitely’s barn? What about AFFIRMED or ALYDAR? Yes, this happens all the time….but it wasn’t always that way. I don’t have a problem with the horse being sold…I have a problem with her being yanked from the CARETAKERS that actually have more involvement than any owner ever will…..IT’S JUST SICKENING. It simply shows of lack of ethics and decency…..

  • ij

What a shame this Hugh Hefner lookalike, egomaniac can step into our sport and BUY anyone he wants. Now to run her in the Preakness. Switching her to Assmussen. What a greedy self centered individual. Go back to suing everyone and stomping your grapes. Get out of our business. Prove you can breed, raise and train a quality horse and you will gain respect. Just another Paragallo.

  • Ray Paulick

Wow…but what do you folks REALLY think about the deal? I haven’t seen this much emotion about a horse being sold for a long time. I think it tells me we have a real star in this game (as if her Oaks victory wasn’t enough).. Let’s all hope she stays sound and in training as long as possible.

I happen to agree with Steven Crist, writing in Sunday’s DRF, saying the Preakness just got “bigger and better” because of the addition of Rachel Alexandra to the lineup. How can we not be excited about this? I’d much rather see her against the boys in Baltimore than have a virtual walkover against fillies at Belmont.

I heard so many complaints going into the Kentucky Derby that the owners and trainer of Rachel Alexandra were too conservative for not running their filly against colts, and now I’m hearing complaints because her new owner and trainer are too aggressive in running her against colts.

  • Barbara

Ray is right about the emotion. She really does seem to belong to everyone in a way. Which only a superstar horse can do.

I have already taken my shots over the move out of Wiggins barn. At least they left Calvin on. I don’t think she should go back in 2 weeks against competition that is so stiff compared to what she has seen. The sheets guys don’t like it as the Oaks was a huge number I guess. Moss wrote a great piece about it today on espn.com. But I am excited and hope she does well and comes home safe. And wins. One thing Jackson must have thought of when choosing a rider for his investment. Is who will know her best, and take care of her if it is not her day? Borel.

  • Gach

WOW – talk about emotional. The Rachel contingency are throwing around words like great and superstar and all she’s done is trounce a group of sorry-ass maiden winners. It’s great though – I’m starting to salivate over the good horses that will be going off as long shots because of all the emotion betting in the Preakness.

And yeah, Jackson is a Hefner lookalike now that jj mentions it. LOL

  • Kelli

Here’s a quotes from Randy Moss regarding Rachel Alexandra’s “burning desire to run”: “her exercise rider struggled to keep her from breaking into a full-speed run and had to wrestle with her to finally bring her to a stop.”

Here’s a quote from Larry Jones regarding Eight Belles burning desire to run: “You have to pull on her in the morning to get her to stop. With Hard Spun, you’d tell him to stop and he’d say, ‘OK.”

I’ve never been one who thinks fillies shouldn’t run against colts, but if you read articles about Eight Belles from before the Derby and articles about Rachel now, the descriptions of the fillies are disturbingly similar.

I really wish Rachel’s owners would rethink their decision to run her in the Preakness and give her more time to recoup from the Oaks, then run her against the boys later. Failing that, I hope she can’t get in because of a 14 horse field.

  • Erin

Here’s what I think: this collection of comments would look decidedly different in the pre-Barbaro era.

  • Barbara

I cannot believe the disgusting plan of collusion to keep the filly out of the Preakness.

    1. I don’t think the filly should run for her own sake but by god, I support them running her and the fans that want to see her.
    2. Jess is an a$$ to take her from Wiggins and the former owners are just a$$es all the way around for the way they did the deal so fast and yanked the rug out from underneath Wiggins.
    3. The Zayat/Allen/Mary Lou conspiracy is just beyond stomach turning behavior with no regard for the sport or the fans and wrapped in sanctimonious bullshit about how Jackson stole Calvin from the Derby winner – NO, Mark “I Bribe YOU” Allen and Ahmed “Gutless Wonder “Zayat – Calvin ASKED to ride the filly – and then Zayat outrageously suggested he was saving the sport from an Eight Belles situation?? Obviously he thinks she would break down AFTER kicking the crap out of all those big strong male horses, doesn’t he?

Just so disappointing to see the fear of the filly and the antipathy for her new owner spill over to screw the fans.
