Hawthorne Race Course says it was told by Churchill Downs that the Grade III Illinois Derby will not be included on the new “Road to the Derby” points system until at least 2014.

The Illinois Derby is the most notable 3-year-old graded stakes not included in the new 36-stakes race point system that starts on Sept. 27 with the Royal Lodge Stakes in Great Britain. Hawthorne president Tim Carey told the Louisville Courier-Journal that the race will have a purse increase next year so the race can’t be excluded in coming years.

“We had verbal discussions with Churchill Downs on it, then we flew down there and met with them face to face, just trying to convince them of the importance of the Illinois Derby to be part of Road to the Derby. Unfortunately it fell on deaf ears,” Carey said.

This is so typical of Churchill Downs. Reminds me of when they denied TVG press credentials to cover the Kentucky Derby.

Churchill Downs Corporate is destroying the very name that has been synonomous with horse racing for years… very sad…  They have absolutely no knowledge of the racing industry and treats it as such… :(

I would not bother then with the Illinois Derby in the spring.

Run the race in 2013 in the fall on the week before or after the Breeders’ Cup in late October-early November as the last big money race on dirt for three year olds.  The race would probably get a better field than it would in the spring (of three year olds who would never have gone in the Breeders’ Cup anyway), purse increase or not and probably get it back to Grade 2 status.

I’ve got an idea. Everyone get the vaccine against Derby Fever. Race your horse where you want including the Ill Derby..Forget the Triple Crown. Geld your colts and keep them racing-we have more than enough sires  already. Go back to having horses race in their conditions and earn their way to the Stakes races.  Enjoy your horses for the wonderful animals that they are and then when they are ready-retire them to good homes. Do not let one big weekend dictate your wishes. The Belmont fall is now an afterthought because of the Breeders Cup  and that is a shame.

Self interest, absurd. CDI catering to the Euros and the KY Breeders that hate ILL for daring to compete with KY.
