Reports from Saratoga on Thursday morning indicate that Fort Larned, who would have been one of the favorites for the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes on Saturday, will have to be scratched from the race due to a ‘hind end issue’ that developed this morning.

The Daily Racing Form reports that the Ian Wilkes trainee returned to his barn a little off. Wilkes told the DRF, “This morning the horse wasn’t himself behind. I don’t think it’s anything serious. You have to be 110 percent in these races. These are good horses.”

Wilkes indicated that he would instead try to train Fort Larned up to the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, which will be run Sept. 28.

With the scratch of Fort Larned, the Woodward will have a field of six – Mucho Macho Man, Ron the Greek, Paynter, Alpha, Flat Out, and Successful Dan.

Ian Wilkes states it’s not serious.
It’s good planning by Ian Wilkes to have won a BC Win & Your In for Fort Larned.
He can be patient and prepare Fort Larned for the BC Classic in Nov.
