Reports from Saratoga on Thursday morning indicate that Fort Larned, who would have been one of the favorites for the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes on Saturday, will have to be scratched from the race due to a ‘hind end issue' that developed this morning.
The Daily Racing Form reports that the Ian Wilkes trainee returned to his barn a little off. Wilkes told the DRF, “This morning the horse wasn't himself behind. I don't think it's anything serious. You have to be 110 percent in these races. These are good horses.”
Wilkes indicated that he would instead try to train Fort Larned up to the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, which will be run Sept. 28.
