In the days following the Boston Marathon bombings, Sovereign Stable president Matt Gatsas was brainstorming names for the 2-year-olds in his stable. He discovered that “Boston Strong” was available in the Jockey Club names book, and realized it would be a great tribute to those affected by the bombings.
Gatsas named his Pioneerof the Nile colt after the slogan that united the city after the tragedy, and donated $1,000 to the One Fund. Further, he pledged that 5 percent of the horse's on-track earnings will go to the fund.
Bred in New York by Grapestock LLC, the colt is out of Danehill Dancer (IRE) mare Truly Enchanting (IRE). Boston Strong is training with John Terranova II and is aiming toward a first start at Saratoga this summer.
