Black Caviar hangs on to win Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot Black Caviar hangs on to win Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot

Undefeated mare Black Caviar was diagnosed with two muscle tears and severe bruising to her hindquarters by veterinarians Sunday morning.

The veterinarians told trainer Peter Moody “she definitely would’ve felt it during her run.”

The physical issues could explain why she was unable to produce her customary acceleration during the race.

“She’s entering quarantine today, we’re sending her home, but we’ll be able to have the injuries treated whilst she’s in quarantine,” Moody said.

Moody added: “She’ll now spend four weeks in quarantine and then when we get her home we will give her three months off and get her ready for the Spring Carnival in Melbourne in November.”

Such a great horse.   May she feel no pain, and relish in her accomplishments!

  • Charlie Weis

She may go down in History as the Greatest Racing Thoroughbred Filly/Mare of all time. How many Group 1 Wins against the Boys. 22 Wins against the best without a loss. The Folks down under must be so proud of her. I hope she lives a long life and produces many winners. Thanks for the Racing Memories.

Congratulations to Black Caviar and her connections.  I wish she could come to BC 2012 but clearly that doesn’t seem to be on the table for her.  Speedy healing to the Champ!

  • Conni

We all pray she will be able to come back to her glory without further injury.  These are the kind of horses our industry needs.  Heroes.  Heroes that run instead of going to the breeding sheds.  Heroes that show their mettle.  Owners that look at the glory of the sport not the almighty dollars.  Good luck to Black Caviar and her connections.

Fantastic race and effort! Media reports suggest that the mare barely hung on to win. After watching the video she was cruising away with it when her jockey inexplicably pulled her up just before the finish line. Black Caviar then restarted about three jumps from the wire. The effort was immeasurably impressive. There’s no touching her.  Fantastic sportsmanship by her connections to ship her all that way. Thank you!

Don’t book the stud yet, if you read the whole article, after a well deserved rest they plan on running her in the spring.

  • DC

He didn’t pull her up, he quit riding, in his own words, he said he was giving her the chance to coast in as usual, well bad choice, with 2 horses running you down, and going up hill, coasting wasn’t an option, she was not at home where she has been so much the best

  • Tiznowbaby

What a gritty, gutsy athlete this horse is. So much heart.

  • LongTimeEconomist

Have you ever read about Kincsem???

  • May Flower

    Well said Conni!

She is so smart, talented and brave. Her people deserve her and should be the standard in racing everywhere! Their being candid about her injuries and choosing rest over meds is comforting. I am looking forward to seeing Nelly run again if she is still enjoying herself.

Heck of a race considering the problems, one heck of a racehorse.

Godspeed to the “wonder from down under”. Black Caviar is amazing-talent, poise and grace under fire. She is well deserving of some rest/time off to heal.
All the best to her and may she be remembered for all of HER accomplishments.
A big thank you  to her connections  for sharing her with the world.

  • Ida Lee

I did not comment on the unbelievable Queen of All Things Equine Black Carviar’s race yesterday because I was so angry at Nolan and the pompous Royal Ascot asses who were commenting on the race that I was afraid Mr. Paulick would not allow me to comment ever again on his blog. First of all, you would think she had lost the race. What I saw was that Nolan dropped the reins to slow her down (cruising I think he said) while there were 2 speed demons on her glorious butt. And she wins by a whisker but she still WINS.  That to me is the ultimate sign of a champion.

But to the commentators, the “win” only showed that Frankel can beat her at any distance and what a let down the race was.  What freaking race were they watching? How dare they insult this precious Mare at the time of her greatest triumph? And now it turns out she was not only slowed down just before the finish line but she was injured. With all that against her, she still WON!! Get a grip idiots…you have a beautiful and great champion in Frankel and his win by 11 lengths was to put it mildly awesome.  But do not insult Australia, it’s people and it’s champion, who many believe is one of the greatest racehores of all time, in order to build up your champion. He does not need it and quite frankly, if he could talk, he’d say stop embarrassing me Morons. There’s room for two Treasures.

I agree with Ida Lee. I was appalled by the comments made by the British talking heads after Black Caviar won her race. It was as if they disliked her and her connections, and wished she had lost. I hope they receive a reprimand and a cut in pay. Show a little class.

  • Hazizaffirohome

Lovely response Ida, I totally agree with you.   Maureen

What a mare! What a gutsy win! She counts as one of the truly great ones. Hope she heals up okay. But if she doesn’t, she’s answered all the questions anyone could ever ask her.

  • DawnP

Ouch! Get well soon sweetie! You have a lot of fans in America!

  • Beach Bum

Someday if I have half the guts and heart of this courageous horse, I’ll be lucky.  God bless her…

  • Cheryl

I agree that Black Caviar was fantastic to win despite all of her problems, and long may she continue to race.

However, I do feel that part of the reason for some, and I emphasise some, British commentators crabbing the race is that BC’s connections were pretty disparaging of British racing and European sprinters in the build up to the race.  I believe at one point her trainer said “we’re taking her to run in the mud against handicappers”.  I know that it is the Australian way to be confident and engage in what Americans like to call “smack talk”, but to a lot of people here it was downright disrespectful.  We are incredibly proud of our heritage and the attitude of some Australians left a bitter taste in the mouth.

Us Brits and the Aussies have always had a lot of banter when it comes to sports and the like, but I have been downright ashamed of some of the comments I have read online (not on PR I hasten to add) from both sides.  People who act in that way have no right to call themselves racefans.
