Rider John Velazquez, who has been recovering from a fractured rib sustained in a spill on April 7, is on track to return to the saddle on Wednesday. His return comes just four days ahead of his projected Kentucky Derby start aboard Verrazano.
Velazquez told the Daily Racing Form that he expects final approval from his doctors on Monday and plans to work horses Tuesday morning at Belmont. Besides his Derby and Oaks commitments, he will be taking his return slowly, with a maximum of four mounts on Derby day, and three on Oaks day, including Dreaming of Julia.
“I'm being realistic. I'm going to give 100 percent to every horse I'm riding,” Velazquez said. “I'm not going to ride three horses the first day and be tired by the time I get to the third one. I'm going to build my strength back little by little.”
