Top NY legislator wants Belmont Park to be considered for casino

Not wanting Long Island to be left out in the cold, New York Sen. Dean Skelos stated that he would like Belmont Park to be considered for one of the locations for a future casino in the state.

According to a report by the Blood-Horse, New York state officials held a meeting regarding casino expansion in the state Jan. 30. After the meeting Skelos stated, “Belmont is one of the areas with no (video lottery terminals) unlike the other tracks, and that has to be part of the discussion.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed up to as many as seven new casinos for the state, with the first three locations being limited to upstate New York.

    I think that you would be doing a travesty to Belmont Park if changed it into a casino as you would lose the family atmosphere for downstate racing as wouldn’t think twice of bringing my kids to a race day at Aqueduct now as there is no activities whatsoever for the kids!

    Bet 90% of the tracks in the country have no real activities for children…thats one BIG problem they don’t have a clue about…ty…

    There is zero outside seating at GP, this is now a casino with an adjacent racetrack. Go to florida in the winter and sit inside, no thanks.

    Not to mention that the contract will presumably be similar to that at AQU, where they casino has NO incentive to upgrade the racing side, in fact instead competing with it. Stronarch shares both the track and the casino, and his love for racing is legit, whomever gets the Belmont contract couldn’t care less about racing except as a necessary evil.
