At its board meeting today, the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) achieved one of its major goals of recent years – broadening television distribution of California racing – when the board approved a proposal whereby Stronach Group Racing (SGR) offered to enter into a reciprocal agreement with TVG. According to the agreement, SGR would permit TVG to broadcast the Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields race meets in return for HRTV having the ability to broadcast the Del Mar and Hollywood Park meets.

Additionally, the TOC board tabled a vote on exchange wagering in California for one year.

“The concept of exchange wagering has been a polarizing issue among the stakeholders in California racing, and this action will give us additional time to study this betting alternative and consider if it is in the best interests of the industry in our state,” said Mike Pegram, Chairman of the TOC.

“The inability to showcase all the race meets in California on both TVG and HRTV has long been an area of contention for the California Horse Racing Board,” Pegram added. “Moreover, the lack of uniform distribution of the California product both in the Golden State and nationwide has been a primary concern for the TOC as it seeks to increase revenue for purses, especially in Northern California, where the horsemen race for considerably less money than in the South. Hopefully expanded distribution of the Golden Gate Fields races on TVG would be a shot in the arm for those racing in the North.”

“While we are pleased to have accomplished this long-sought-after goal, we will continue to seek alternative revenue sources and have not slammed the door closed on the concept of exchange wagering,” said Lou Raffetto, President of TOC. “We are simply putting this contentious issue on the back burner until we can analyze it further and, hopefully, build a consensus within the industry.”

It should be noted that both Del Mar and Hollywood Park are currently under exclusive broadcasting agreements with TVG and, as of this date, none of these parties have agreed to the terms proposed by SGR.

TOC is the official organization serving new, veteran and future Thoroughbred owners in the state. It represents, advances, and protects owners’ interests and rights in legislative, administrative and business matters. www.toconline.com.

This would be an amazing thing if it happens. This prevents many people from having to get 2 sattelite dishes on their roof, HRTV isnt on Directv (why, i cant tell you) so its a great thing if you can see alll the So Cal races with one dish.

    • Triplecrownquest

I can see ALL California races on ONE dish…DISH NETWORK…also ATT Uverse carries both TVG and HRTV as well.  Cox Communications also carries both racing channels…if you are stuck with Direct TV..that sounds like a personal problem.

      • Greystone104

Hey Mr. TCquest: Is your brain not functioning? Its very nice for you that you have DISH, however, for those of us with DIRECTV, we have been limited to TVG for the past 9 years. This utterly foolish “war” between Stronach and TVG has lasted long enough. Why should there be any exclusivity as to the broadcasting of races form Cali, or from any other venue?

As for being “stuck” with DirecTV, I prefer the services that it provides, including The NFL and MLB packages, neither of which is available on DISH. So maybe, you have the problem, and not us!

      • roger

You must not like the NFL or MLB packages Direct Tv has to offer.

      • stillriledup

Im already a Directv customer, so, i’m not going to be changing and going thru the hassle of switching companies. Besides, Directv has sports packages that i need to have, i’m not sure Dish has those options.

Do they still race in California?  Does anyone outside that state really bet one nickle on it or even care? As a high takeout/low rebate track most big players gave up on California years ago.

The TOC reminds me of a publicist for a D-List star, disseminating all sorts of PR when the reality is very few give a damn about their client.

      • stillriledup

Serious players (should watch every race at all the major tracks. Even if one doesnt actually BET so Cal, you need to know what’s going on if you want to make major wagers in stakes races around the country.

This is really stupid. TOC approves a proposal for Burger King to offer McDonald’s fries if McDonald’s offers Burger King burgers, subject to McDonald’s agreeing.

    Right.

This is the final evidence that the TOC does not care about the players and only its own selfishness. These jerks push the CA Legislature to increase the takeout so that they can get more of the players money while not living up to the promises made for the takeout increases. Yet, these bastards get a cut of bets I make on non-CA tracks with my ADW providers because I live within 25 miles of both Santa Anita and Hollywood Park.

I amthisclose to telling the TOC to take this sport and shove it!!! Why do I need to support a sport with my time and money when the owners are that selfish? I don’t and I won’t.

Did I read that right? They approved a SRG proposal that gives them the right to air Del Mar and Hollywood, rights that now belong exclusively to TVG, without even asking TVG?
And then they tell TVG no way to exchange wagering? Does SRG run the TOC? It sure looks like they are calling the shots.

    • Abcya123ya

      AMEN!

    • Rags2Riches

Not to mention SRG now has additional time to develop the platform for their exchange wagering product.  In a year, when SRG is ready, issues detrimental to the sport, like race-tampering and cannibalism of tote, will suddenly go away.  In the meantime, the customer is forced to send millions offshore in search of a better deal.

TVG has never been the same since Betfair bought this company. Ten years ago TVG was a much much better racing network than it is today. They do very little to expand horseracing or try to attract new racing fans.

I have to suffer with Time Warner cable which only carries TVG. So, for personal reasons I’m HAPPY. TVG sometimes is so stupid with all their on screen banter about nothing, or worse yet, what they had for breakfast. Please, TVG commentators, get with the program.

    • HappyHarriet

I have that dreadful Time Warner, also, so have had to subscribe additionally to HRTV via streaming online.  It is OK, though, but I’d much rather watch both channels on my widescreen.  There’s something very odd about watching 1200 pound brute athletes on a laptop.  Love HRTV, though, with the emphasis on the entire horse world, not just racing.

      • Mlmartin

we can’t get cable so we went with dish. we get both tvg and hrtv. why put up with cable when you don’t have to.

Attention Mr Pegram/TOC.   The shot in the arm needed for Golden Gate Fields has nothing to do with TVG/HRTV.   The TOC’s business model of offering mostly pitiful 5 and 6 horse fields with nearly a 25% takeout has been and will continue to be a disaster for the industry in California.  Business did not decline by $500 milion dollars in the fiscal year 2010-2011 because the horseplayers couldn’t watch HRTV.
