An official with the New Mexico Racing Commission said on Tuesday that nine horses who raced at Ruidoso Downs this spring have tested positive for three banned medications, including the painkiller Dermorphin.

The names of the nine horses and their trainers have not been released since the commission is still finalizing its investigation. Once notified, the trainers can request a second test.

At least five of the positives occurred in trials for the Ruidoso Futurity and Ruidoso Derby in late May, although none of those horses won their trial races.

    Class l violators
    Lifetime expulsion

    Add the cost up of following existing penalties;
    Horse abuse,( fan & public’s loss of respect for sport), cost?
    injury and fatal accidents to jockeys, plus (added cost to providing insurance), cost?
    Exodus of owners and it’s connection to no. Of horses in racing, cost?
    Inability to attract “best and brightest” to careers in racing, cost?
    Sport’s devaluation as a “product” in international market, cost?

    These external costs
    are carried by everyone in the sport who plays by the rules.
    Why?

    Five positives occurred in late May……When did they START testing with the new assay  that can detect synthetic Dermorphin?  My guess is sometime in late May.
    Along the same lines of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association sending out a Press Release that NY has had zero Dernorphin positives……when they’ve been using an assay INCAPABLE of detecting it.  Geee…..I understand no potbelly pigs domiciled in Maine have tested positive!  Doesn’t that make everyone feel confident in Maine’s testing program……DUH!

    Narcowboys must be kept far, far away from race horses, preferably in jail. The chemists, co-conspirators and enablers should be exposed and severely punished.

    Not only that, TAS, but they are guilty of reckless endangerment running a whacked horse. Every rider in the race should press charges.

    I can’t believe that people would do something like this. Not only are these things banned, but they are probably bad for the horses in the long run. horse supplements are meant to help keep your horse healthy, not cheat.
