The New York Racing Association announced earlier this week that it will launch a new pick five wager this fall.

The wager, which will be available beginning at the start of the Belmont Park fall meet on Sept. 7, will have a 15 percent takeout, according to the Daily Racing Form. The new wager will have a 50-cent minimum, unlike the pick six which has a $2 minimum bet.

The New York State Gaming Commission gave its conditional approval to the proposed new wager. NYRA must first conduct a ‘tote test' to “ensure that its bet-processing provider could properly handle the bet and its payoffs.”

Great. And I mean that. But if we can have 15% on a pick 5, why can’t we have 15% on straight wagers and elimination of breakage? You know, build the churn.

And this will have no impact on Pick Six pools! Too much.

The pick six doesn’t handle in New York. They’d be better off making it a once a week (Saturday) special with a guarantee and make the pick 5 the daily bet ending with the feature.

        Excellent idea

Does anybody know if this wager will be on the first 5 races (California Style= which sucks at all tracks other than Del Mar) or on the more playable last 5 races ?

The people who are posting here would be a huge upgrade to NYRAs or most racetrack management teams.
