The Maryland Jockey Club, the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and the Maryland Horse Breeders Association announced the 2014 winter schedule for live racing at Laurel Park, according to the Daily Racing Form.
The meet will include 46 racing days over 13 with opening day scheduled for Jan. 1. Live racing will run Thursday through Saturday, plus racing on New Year's Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, through the last week of February. Beginning Feb. 26, Laurel will add Wednesday racing for a four-day race week to last for the remainder of the meet, before live racing shifts to Pimlico Race Course on April 3.
The winter meet will include 16 stakes races worth a total of $1.95 million, including the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap, with an increased purse of $300,000, the Grade 3 General George Handicap, now worth $250,000, to be held over Presidents Day weekend.
The plan is still pending approval by the Maryland Racing Commission, which is slated to review the schedule at its Dec. 17 meeting.
