The 2014 National Handicapping Championship kicked off today in Las Vegas, where about 500 players are gathered at Treasure Island Casino.
Partway through the day, Tony Brice lead the field with 169 points, followed closely by Francis Boustany with 158.60 and John Wilhelm, who shot from 53rd to take third place by midafternoon. A win by 34-1 longshot Midnight Eclipse in Oaklawn Park's eighth race shook up the early leaderboard.
The winner's prize will be $750,000 for all competitors except Brent Sumja, who is eligible for a $2 million bonus for his win in the National Handicapping Tour.
