Diagnostic tests at the CAHFS laboratory at UC Davis have confirmed that a euthanized horse was EHV-1 positive.  On Tuesday, March 5, a horse at Santa Anita – My Sugar Sugar, trained by Eddie Truman – required euthanasia after developing neurological signs. There have been no other reported cases of EHV-1 at Santa Anita.

My Sugar Sugar had been feverish four days earlier and developed neurological signs on day four. Biosecurity procedures were implemented that day and the California Department of Agriculture was notified of a suspected case of EHV-1.  The average incubation period for EHV-1 is 4 to 7 days, with the majority of cases being 3 to 8 days, but with some taking up to 14 days. All horses in the stable are being closely monitored and none of the others has exhibited signs of fever or illness.

Horsemen in the Santa Anita stable area are advised to be especially vigilant in this regard and to immediately notify the CHRB Official Veterinarian if they have any suspicious cases.

The CHRB provides information on EHV-1 and ways to prevent the spread of the disease here and here.

where are they going? most tracks shut their doors to horses coming from infected tracks.

      • Sandra Warren

When we had an outbreak at GGF a few years ago, they announced about Tuesday that all transfers between tracks would be stopped on Saturday.  So all kinds of transferring took place between Tuesday and Saturday.  I suppose that track management thought that they’d give trainers at Pln with a horse ready to enter a chance to move it to GGF.  Instead it gave GGF horses a chance to get out and spread the disease.  Lucky for them nothing happened, but it could have been very bad.  Nobody wants a quarantine; it inconvenieces everyone.  But the quicker it happens and the more stringently, the quicker the outbreak is halted.  Sometimes you just can’t only think about yourself.

The quarantine at Hawthorne lasted almost 3 months. Not fun and very worrisome. Lots of disinfectant and temperature taking.

Holy You-Know-What!  I’ve been so accustomed to seeing EHV-1 + the names of any other States so seeing it mentioned AT SANTA ANITA is a big of a gut wrench.  So concerned about our beautiful horses and everyone connected to them.
