A representative of Humboldt County Fair hoping for a little help from the California Horse Racing Board last week instead got this from outgoing chairman David Israel:

“I don't know what else to tell you.  Tax the pot growers.”

Israel was responding to a request by Humboldt to have more 2014-2015 exclusive racing dates on which no other California track would be running.  Under the compromise approved by the CHRB, Humboldt will get one extra “host” date, for a total of four next year.  Humboldt representative Jim Morgan said that's not enough and indicated the arrangement would guarantee the failure of the county fair's racing.

“There's only so much money in the pot to offer,” Israel said at the CHRB meeting. “You're getting four host days. You've got to find a way to make it work.”

Reminds me of when Calder first introduced the subsequently successful “Summit of Speed” program of sprint stakes. The connection is that I would have liked to have seen them do something special for their lively and passionate Jamaican patrons, namely a day of races in their honor called the Summit of Weed

CHRB is the last place to look for a solution to ANY problem. Some prime examples of their work: 4 years to come up with a completely inadequate solution for the lack of stabling for one the most important race meets in the country (how they could license a track to operate without adequate stabling is… fill in the blank); the demise of Oak Tree, an important source of funding for many racing industry programs; and my favorite- waiving the rule against owning more than one race track in the state and then signing on as an executive with the beneficiary of the waiver.

Let those pathetic fairs die. Save the horses.

More arrogance and ignorance from the CHRB.

  • Lost In The Fog

The Humboldt County Fair race meet doesn’t merit the two weeks worth of exclusivity on the Northern California racing calendar that they are asking for. The fair itself is sparsely attended and the quality of racing is at best a joke. I see no reason for the CHRB to award Humboldt any more than the four host dates contained in the compromise.

Retire horses earlier before they fall to the fair level and while they can have a useful second career. Grow pot legally in the infield for income and have fun racing bikes or whatever over the track. Horses and pot consumers will be happy and no more dealing with the CHRB. Everybody wins.

        You bet!

    • Convene

The good smell of horses would be wiped out by the horrible smell from the infield! Of course, if horse racing had been replaced by bike racing, I guess that wouldn’t matter, would it!

Don’t “tax the pot growers”, grow the damn pot! Mr. Morgan and his fair people should grow weed in the infield. Easy-growing, lush year-around income for the Humbolt County Fair! No more begging then scraping meager profits from racing poor left-over horses on whatever dates the CHRB decides to throw at them!

So, the CHRB think Ferndale is too sparsely attended
    to merit help.
1 I doubt Israel and cronies have been there
2 have they ever been to GG on a weekday ?
    It is deserted.
