California bill legalizing and regulating online poker withdrawn before vote
Sen. Rod Wright announced at the beginning of the Senate Governmental Organization Committee meeting that he was withdrawing proposed legislation that would legalize and regulate online poker, reports the Sacramento Bee. The version that was to be presented had drawn opposition from major gambling tribes and card rooms.
Critics of the bill said it would give too much power to horse racing, Las Vegas and international gambling interests while shutting out some California tribes. Supporters argued it could raise millions in new revenue for the state.
