Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner is on board the Orb bandwagon despite the Malibu Moon colt's loss in the Preakness Stakes.
Boehner was photographed wearing an “Orb” hat Saturday at an informal event for friends and family in his hometown of West Chester, Ohio, to celebrate the recent marriage of his daughter, Lindsay.
The House Speaker attended the May 4 Kentucky Derby with Kentuckians Joe Craft and Kelly Knight, noted Republican fundraisers in the Bluegrass State, and was described by one of those with him that day as a “big fan” of Orb following the colt's victory in the Florida Derby.
After the Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable homebred colt won the Run for the Roses (and, we assume, he cashed a wager), Boehner mentioned to Knight that he'd love one of the baseball caps Orb's connections were wearing. She contacted Daisy Phipps Pulito, who assists her father, Dinny Phipps, in management of the stable, and they got the hat to Boehner, but not until after the colt finished well behind Oxbow in the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.
This isn't the first time Boehner was spotted wearing horse-racing themed attire. In February, as Congress was dealing with the budget sequestration, Jude Feld of the Horse Racing Radio Network Tweeted (@racehorsereport) a screen shot from the CBS Morning News showing Boehner wearing a red necktie from Keeneland.
Whether you're a Republican, Democrat or Independent, it's nice to have friends in high places, or at least someone who has some understanding of the horse racing and breeding industry.
Incidentally, for those interested in getting their own “Orb” hat and helping fund equine research, all donations of $50 or more to the Grayson Jockey Club Equine Research Foundation entitles the donor to a cap. Click here for details.
